Ok here some examples as found on March 3rd 2006

Whats wrong with these:

http://www.globosapiens.net/constellation/picture-gondolas-9320.html

http://www.globosapiens.net/inzaghi/picture-venice-7809.html

two brilliant examples of technically perfect shots with original content of a well known place. They are so well captured I would be happy to print them out and hang them on my living room wall...

As a contrast:

http://www.globosapiens.net/mamielle/picture-las-vegas---le-venetian-et-ses-gondoles-28268.html

copy resort style... no originality at all, uninteresting composition, lack of focus... but a better vote

http://www.globosapiens.net/guru_josh/picture-gondolas-waiting-for-a-ride.-19804.html

not in focus, dull, poor light, ... but a better vote

Another shot that I think would belong to the very top of our gallery

http://www.globosapiens.net/nomad/picture-storm-over-st-michel-26900.html

or this one here is in my opinion way to low:

http://www.globosapiens.net/britman/picture-bryce-canyon-national-park-utah-usa-9269.html?rating=1

And what about that one:

http://www.globosapiens.net/suhadis/picture-eiffel-tower-from-pont-de-bir-hakeim-19641.html

A absolute gem in our gallery! Cliché and well known place and everything but look at this picture... I could stare at it all day long!

Now some pics I like but would prefer some of the above to see first:

http://www.globosapiens.net/britman/picture-eye-to-eye-14673.html

funny yes but I would never hang it on my wall

http://www.globosapiens.net/mamielle/picture-argentine--lac-nahuel-huapi-28423.html

nice colors but the background is not in focus and poor light

http://www.globosapiens.net/gloriajames/picture-colourful-lake-24342.html

where's the sharpness?

http://www.globosapiens.net/britman/picture-ban-loma-balcony-view---dreams-are-made-of-this-19283.html

nice view, but could be anyplace...

Just to show a few

Have a great day

Martin

Thanks Martin for your efforts and examples. Some members should read all that above and realize how important rating is as feedback. Rating properly is more important than leaving plain shallow words, rating everything ***** does not help anyone, specially not the photographer, it is dishonest!

I have a simpler scale some might understand better:

***** travel photos for covers and award nominations

**** excellent publishable & quality travel photography

*** good and interesting pictures for galleries and albums

** good really for private use only or some referance points

* not of much travel use an/or bad quality, yet no need to delete it

Zero: really bad, rude or unsuitable pictures should be rated * but also be reported to staff. Pictures with more than 5 one* star ratings should be archived.

Rating need not be on a strict scale but members should just try rate across the scale, from the heart and gut and honestly.

Good health and high spirits!..

I'm still with Spaceout on this subject and with a few other members I've had the pleasure of talking too recently about this subject. The picture rating system has gone too far and I don't like it. It is doing more harm than good. It is making people not want to contribute to Globo.

Some members have chosen to make rating pictures a mission on this site and try to dictate how things should be. They seem to forget that pictures are posted to show others of different places and things.

Who r u to tell people what they can and can not rate on a pic. If I think a pic is 5* so be it. If you think it's 1* that's o.k. too, different people like different photos.

For this reason, I don't really have any desire to share my pics anymore. I show my pics to show others on where I have been and show people special things I have seen in my life. I don't care if the quality is 5* or not. It's what's IN the picture that counts. I'm not a professional photographer, don't plan to be and don't want to be. If posting pictures on this site is always going to lead to comments on photography skills, than I don't want a part of it.

Well said Tashi, I feel the same as you. When I joined Globo originally I used to enjoy it here. Somewhere down the line things changed and I've started to feel some sort of uneasyness when I am here. The extraordinary thing I noticed in the case of the fotos I uploaded was that they were rated reasonably well immediately after they were put on but plummetted down in ratings after the first few days ( as though there was a gang of assesser's hell bent on getting my ratings down). Initially I found this upsetting but learnt to accept it as part of life. Sadly it took away the attraction of globo altogether as far as I am concerned. To be fair on Globo I must say that there are a number of wonderful administrators and members around. But I've come accross a few members who are only interested in increasing their ratings and are prepared to do anything to achieve that. Since then I've found a few other communities (far smaller in size but with amazing people as members) where I was made welcome and through which I had 4 friends (all from the U.S. who came to Kerala to enjoy our hospitality and went back contented) in 2006. I hope the same can be said of Globo one day. One thing is sure. I do not feel that enthusiastic or confident in contributing here compared to some other sites I am a member of. These are honest words from once an active member now thinking of coming back and contributing more. I hope you will all take these lines in the proper spirit and help me overcome my current inertia to spend time here and start contributing again. I wish u all a great 2007. Take care

Cheers.

Kris

Eifel tower picture

Martin is fully entitled to his opinion.

Mine is that this is a picture of two major focii with an empty centre. All apologies to the photographer but i also may beg entitlement to a separate opinion. By the way i havwe not rated ths picture.

Ta Shi you are so right.

Time to stop berating each other for exercising our right to vote as we see fit.

And Rudi, i am not sure that the clarity you set out in this forum matches the rather complex reasoning you used in the iceberg we discussed recently.

If we could look at the names beside the votes we could quickly see who votes in particular ways. Certainly it is clear that some competitors in the top twenty vote down the pictures ahead of them.

Transparency will help and while we wait we are all grown-ups who hopefully will have the freedom to rate as we see fit, free from the berating of our colleagues.

Hi Folks

So it's picture Rating once again. :-)

I agree with those that say that everybody has a right to express his personal opinion freely!

I don't mind if somebody rates one picture lower or higher than I did. I mind if people don't rate fairly. It is not fair to vote every single picture 4 od 5 stars, there I totaly agree with Rudi.

Rudi is one of those persons who did rate a whole lot of pictures and tries to give fair votes and clear feedback. I think that he could explain every single vote he gave accordingly.

I completely agree with Rudi that those people who whish they could give 6 or 7 stars, for a particularly good shot are not really voting fairly, but are voting for sypathetic reasons. It is very nice to vote everything 5*. People might like you, but it's not honest and only flattering. (I wonder how long they would like you, before they find out that you are only smattering and your comments and votes are superfluous). But as we are all here to show off our stuff and like to get nice feedback (only high votes) we are not happy if we get 2 or 3 stars for pictures we like.

Hugh you are one of those who are asking for an expression of free will but are the main person who wants to debate about who is giving votes that are not similar to yours! It sounds like: "Every opinion is ok, as long as it is the same as mine!"

Generally speaking, stop worrying about those votes you get. The real value for the picutres is in your heart. You are the ones who took the shots and you like them or not. You should not be dependent on others views. There is no need for others to feel the same as you. But that what you feel is right for you. Stand up to your self esteem and don't get bothered to what others say. If you are interested in learning something about why your pictrues are not as liked as others you might get some information in the comments. But I think most people here are not into learning but into showing off!

Oh and a final word. Always keep in mind that there is a big difference in picture quality depending on the picture size! A picture might look quite good in size S, ok in size L but not really good in size XL!

My 2 Cents

Martin

Oh dear! I hoped we had finished this one. Let's face it; we don't all agree; most if not all of us think we are right [I do concede there may be a few mischief makers] and therefore we shall go on behaving as we do behave - perhaps a bit more sadly because some people feel they should try to coerce us into behaving differently.

As for myself, I shall continue to feel free to upload some [indeed most] pics for information about a place. Of course I should like them to be of high quality but, if they are the only ones I have to show something I consider informative, so what? They won't end up where any outside visitor to the site is likely to look.

My grades seem usually to be within one grade of the average and I tend to say when they are not. I think a pic should be of high quality, informative and a real pleasure to see if it is to get 5*. I feel free to grade as I feel at any other level.

Note that I am not telling anybody else what to do. I should hope to be treated in the same way.

Cheers

David

Very humble apologies. Did not know that tis is a debate. Thought it was expression of opinion. Obviously i expressed my opinion very poorly very and am badly misunderstood.

Cant tell how anyone knows motivation of other - sympathy etc.

Say again transparency removes doubt.

Have now said my last word on the subject - Peace be with you all

... after 4 weeks, I am so pleased to see that only a few members are against my enthusiasm for the rating system at GLOBO. Also see, the system is now working honestly again, the last few weeks (for a while?). Please note that my last post is an expansion of that which we discussed over a whole year before laying down these guidelines above at this "F.A.Q" and that this is not really the place for hot discussion. Some members here have reacted totally out of the field of this F.A.Q forum – most of these entries (including mine) should be moved as not to confuse new members? Funny that only those that previously misused the system, were indifferent or submit bad quality photography and contributions reacted here : - ). That member averging 2.8 for many uploaded pictures over years should not really not be too quick to comment here. If we are willing to accept any trashy stuff from the entire global population, this site is dammed?

We are not professional photographers, they have their own websites but expect a little bit of quality! This community is serious about INTERNATIONAL travel and that which benefits others when travelling. Backgarden flowers or landscape, private and family snaps and even poor quality travel pictures ARE ACCEPTED at GLOBOsapiens but please expect these to be rated * or ** perhaps a lucky ***

A year ago about 8 of 18000 members were misusing the rating system. My last addition was aimed at the last 2 members that were still rating nearly everything 5* and they have now stopped their nonsense too. My last entry above is intended as optional guideline for those not understanding the other scales we have set and it worked! I am not a dictator like some suggest, just ask ALL to rate honestly. I am one of 18000+ members equal to all of us, each the same ONE vote!

My pictures plummet down the list too! My best and PoM is now #120 think? I accept that and others should too. The list is the best of the world and globe, anyone expecting that their picture must remain in the top 20 forever is very very incorrectly optimistic and even weird! [One member insists this and achieves this with force still - our next problem!]

IMPORTANCE OF THE RATING SYSTEM:

[for both pictures and reports]

Our best (also new) contributions are displayed randomly on the GLOBO Start-page and for each destination be it a country or place at further pages. The rating system helps our system (computer) to choose the best and ultimate for these pages. This is important for many reasons, mainly aesthetic for members but to attract paid advertisers too without which this service would not be free but $100/year! By helping to display the (truly) rated best, each member that rates properly is promoting GLOBO, others are spies and non-members!

SUPPORT AND GENUINE ADVICE:

If any member feels that their pictures (or reports) are not rated correctly please let us know. I can give a very detailed personal rating and moderators and other senior members, staff too.
