Uplistsikhe - Georgia Uplistsikhe was founded in the first millennium century B.C. It was destroyed by the invaders Mongols in the XIII century (by Hulagu, Genghis Khan grandson), and left abandoned. Today only ruins are left, except a chapel, still active. It is located at 10 kilometres East of Gori, in direction to Tbilisi. It was a stop for the caravans during the legendary Silk Road. Uplistsikhe means in Georgian language: The Head of God. Look at the silhouette of the stone; it indeed looks like a head.
