BARBAKAN This is one of the city gates and dates back to the 14th century. It is an impressive defence tower with 3-metre thick walls. It consists of seven watch towers and some 130 loopholes to shoot at the enemy outside. A 30-metre deep moat surrounded the city and has now been transformed into the Planty Park, the green belt around the city centre. Barbakan is on the north east side of Planty. In July and August it is the venue for open-air concerts.
