Istanbul Report

Posted: 2009-05-17 07:20 AM
Hey Tony,

Thanks very much for reading and rating my report on Istanbul. It was a while ago when I visited, so my memory was a bit hazy for details. But I hope you got a flavour of the place.

All the best

Star Alliance

Posted: 2009-05-14 05:14 PM
Hi Tony,

Yeah, sympathy - although I thought it was reserved for expressing feeling after someone's death. Star Alliance, actually, has been found by five airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines System, Thai Airways International, and United Airlines - none of which have had much to do with Eastern Europe, apart from Lufthansa, which did fly to some eastern European destinations. Now, there is only LOT Polish Airlines from EEC that belongs to the alliance. I am curious how you might have thought there were more EEC airlines there. Hehe :)

It is formidable airlines' alliance. With over 20 members it is also the largest. I have had extraordinary experiences with airlines belonging to the alliance and only one, Continental Airlines, that does not belong to them impressed me. Although, I am hearing that Continental is about to join the alliance later this year. I flew on all member airlines but Air New Zealand, Croatia, Blue1, Turkish, US Airways... Loved them all.

China Airpass

Posted: 2009-05-14 04:43 PM
Hi Tony,

Thanks for the words of empathy, if that's the right word. Oh, in the past, I was able to secure good value airpasses. Like the one in Ethiopia. I had great hopes for this one. Well, such is life. I guess I will wait and see and then I will make sure I will complain very strongly to Star Alliance. I learnt from past experience that complaining often give positive results. At least in compensation... hehe. Monetary, vouchery, or air-miles...

Kindest regards
Krys

Thanks

Hi Tony
Thanks for the comment on my Edinburgh report. It's probably the longest I have gone without writing one!

Are you keen on either form of Rugby? I like watching both but I must admit that the recent preoccupation in Union for kicking away possession for position annoys me intensely. On the other hand, I think the scrums in League have become a waste of time.
Cheers

War time Norway

Posted: 2009-05-07 06:10 AM
Hi Tony
Yes Norway had a bad time during the war, you probably know they still send a Xmas tree every year to stand in Trafalgar square as a thanks for what we did for them, and when we visit they cannot do enough for you.
I am sure you noticed the pics of the Gloptadala, I will send you a pic of the inscription that is displayed there, it is a write up of a battle that took place there in the war against the Germans, makes interesting reading.

Cheers Tom

Hello

Posted: 2009-05-05 03:55 AM
Hello Jacko 1,

I tried to add the rest of my comment to yliang's report on Castelnuovo di Ponto, but the website wouldn't accept what it saw as a second comment. Here it is, if you are interested:
[Comment continued] Pompilia was sent to a convent in Rome before being returned to her parents’ house, where she gave birth to a son on 18th December. On 3rd January 1698, Guido and four accomplices murdered Pompilia and her parents. On February 22nd Guido was beheaded in the Piazza del Popolo, Rome, and the four accomplices were hanged.

Browning believed that Pompilia and Caponsacchi were innocent. The whole of the poem is available online (although as it’s twice as long as “Paradise Lost” it wouldn’t be good to try to read it all online):

There is also a very interesting book on all the places mentioned in the story: ‘The Country of “The Ring and the Book”’ by Sir Frederick Treves, Cassell & Co, 1913 (reprinted 1929).

Hi Tony,
thanks for your kind words in my guestbook. I am not really satisfied with the 'quality' of these old pics but felt I would need an inducement to complete or replace them by new better ones. :)
Hope so much you're feeling on the mend today in spite of another sleepless night!(?)
Best regards - Petra
