Hey

I've been living in Antigua, Guatemala for the last 7 months and spent about 4 months traveling there the year before.

I'm in Europe now, for a short visit. I'll return to Antigua around mid November.

If you have any questions about Guate maybe I can help. Specially about Antigua, learning spanish or doing volunteer work. I worked as a volunteercoordinator for a Spanish school.

Antigua is loads of fun, a great place to learn Spanish, to make yourself useful as a volunteer, to learn about a diferent culture and to meet new people.

Im an American student studying in Monterrey, Mexico this semester and I am trying figure something out for this summer. I am considering travelling down south for around 3 months to either southern Mexico, Belice, or Guatemala. Basically im looking for something to keep me busy for 3 months and hopefully find some kind of income to keep me going for that time. Could you recomend me maybe some places to go or work or volunteer. My main goal for the summer is to better my spanish by next August when I will be returning to Monterrey. Any advice will be greatly apreciated, thanks, Pete

Frankly, Antigua gets old for me fairly soon. Other than the day trips and a market visit, there is not much to do unless you like Catholic ruins. In fact, for my next trip, I will stay in Guate once I am back from Peten. I should have enough time to see dome museums, but not enough to go beyond Antigua to more interesting places in the highlands.

What is this crap? I did not place a link in the previous post. Also I meant some instead of dome. By the way, if you want to get into a message board twhere Central Americaq has its own area, head to the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree at

Remind me, please. Where is Antigua in relation to the archeological zone at Tikal? Is that located nearby, or at some distance?

Hi Russ

Tikal is quite a bit away from Antigua. Traveling by bus it will take you all day. You can book a shuttle through one of the travelstores, there are lots of them in Antigua. That will be the easiest.

There are also flights to Peten, they have a small airport, you should be there from Guate in an hour or so.

If you have the time, the bus ride thru the countryside of guatemala is beautiful. I'm not up to date about any robberies taking place, but if possible just take stuff that you really need.

I think I have a little map of Guatemala somewhere in my files. If I find it I'll put it in my pics. It's not very clear but it will give you an idea. You probably can find a better map on the internet.

Good luck and safe travels
