Bumming around Boracay

  18 votes
In March 2003 I met up with a friend for a trip to Boracay island. Even though I was living in Japan at the time, I needed a more tropical and warm asian vacation. Boracay met my needs for the do-nothing-hang-about-in-the-sun-beach-getaway.

The island is truly a small wonder. It's large enough to have a nice beach holiday but small enough to get bored quickly if you need to trek about and adventure. I stayed in three different hotels, none of which are anything special but all of which were facing the beach. If you love white sand beach and clean, decent facilities look no further than SEA WIND RESORT. This was indeed my favourite section of beach which was postcard picture perfect and away from the main tourist drag. Yet, it is close enough to walk to restaurants, shopping, etc. The walk is along beautiful white sand beach. I stayed at MIKA'S PLACE just long enough to find a cleaner place. Very dim lighting and a dank feel although on a very quiet beach called Diniwid Beach. The last hotel I stayed at (Angol Point) was chosen by my frugal friend and is not even worth describing as it was noisy, dark, and dank with a bathroom that left much to be desired. I would not recommend the tours on horseback for those inexperienced with horses. 10 minutes into my ride, my horse freaked out and the guides had to reign my horse in with the help of a kid who happened to be cycling by! Also watch out for the pesky monkeys at the horse outfit - one of the buggers swatted and tried to steal my camera. Boracay island really is best for those desiring a beach bum type of vacation. If you want lots of great local food, distinct local culture and 5-star hotels - go elsewhere. Thailand would be a far better choice for that set of criteria. Boracay happens to have my favourite white sand beach which is the only reason I will return. The clear, azure blue water is warm and a pleasant way to relax after sitting on the beach with a great book to read.

Favourite spots:
flower on Boracay

WHITE BEACH and the walk toward DINIWID beach as there is a little winding path around a rock that separates it from the main tourist drag.

What's really great:
local children

renting a catamaran and getting a private tour around the island; seeing local children playing on the beaches; sunsets and evening walks along White Beach!

Accommodations:

Restaurants:

ARIA - for pizza

RED COCONUT - for lunch

TRUE FOOD - Indian cuisine

the introduction was great and great pictures- i've heard good things about Boracay, but also that it is very western, very crowded, so I've put off going in favor of the less populated or well known islands. i may have to reconsider thanks to your report!

Nice report with some nice pics. I just returned from 2 months working in Manila (from Japan, same as you) and I never did Boracay. My friends all said it's not a good place to visit if you're by yourself. You report has changed my mind. I'll hit it this summer. I'm now starting to compose a report for Puerto Galera / Sabang -- the one place I _did_ have time to visit. If you've been there and have any pics to share, let me know -- I have lots to say, but not too much to show! Anyway, nice report. Thanks!

There was so much promise in the introduction to this report. I was thinking of a 4* rating, but then the remainder of the report was almost non-existent. You could really shore this one up with additional comments and have an outstanding report. As it stands now, though, there is little in the report other than a great introduction.

Alice,
I enjoyed this report and especially love the photo of the children. When you got to the accommodation and restaurant section it looked as if you had no more inspiration. Maybe you could add something about local food, that would really be interesting.

Here is a link to report guidelines, it is still a draft maybe you can give your opinion.

Wonderful photos! I would love to hear more about the catamaran ride! The ocean looks very clear - did you see alot of fish & sea life?

You're right - I would rather go somewhere else but you give a very good picture of somewhere i could enjoy for a couple of days. I like the bit about the monkey.
