Situated in Southern Alberta, a 1 1/2hr drive to the Foothills(Banff), Calgary is a fast growing city with a population nearing a million. It is the "white collar" city where most major oil/gas companies have their head offices. It is world known for the Stampede where people come from all over N. and S. America to compete. It is also a very spread out city along the Bow River with relatively few trees and no major water bodies(very dry). The winters can be very cold but Chinooks that blow in from the Rockies can change the temperature 15-20c in a day!! ie:(-15c to +5c). There are many km's of bike paths along the Bow Valley and with the Rockies so close, one can either golf or ski on same day. With the city growing so fast, housing is expensive and one can see many suburbs in the making.

Favourite spots:
The Calgary Zoo-truley one of Western Canada's best Zoo's, many attractions and gardens. http://www.calgaryzoo.org/

The Glenbow Museum--Western Canada's Largest Museum(93000 sq.ft) http://www.glenbow.org/

Eau Clair Market/Princes Island--A colorful street market downtown that sells food and handicrafts and is popular for its restaurants, walkways and movie theatre. There is also a park where many street buskers and Canadian geese fight for a space to show their stuff.(with so many geese they mostly show their poop!!)

riding for miles on end in the River Valley!!

What's really great:
Calgary's night life? The under-25 set is generally found along 1st Street SW (around 13 Avenue) and 17th Avenue (around 4th Street), with the over-25 set heading to the Eau Claire Market area.

Stampede Week:
Saddlebronc Riding always begins the Friday following July 2nd. The world-televised parade begins at 9 am on the first Friday of Stampede Week. Many Stampede parties (and the various "saloons") start on the Wednesday or Thursday.

FREE Stampede Breakfasts outside many hotels, the Olympic Plaza and shopping malls between 9 and 11. Some breakfasts come complete with Indians in traditional attire, marching bands from all over the world, gunfighter shootouts, and wagon rides. The biggest breakfasts are held the Saturday after the parade at Chinook Centre (in the S) and Market Mall (in theNW) which typically feed tens of thousands, while listening to a variety of country acts!

Sights:
Heritage Park Village- go there to experience a true western town feel.. http://www.heritagepark.ca/visitor.htm

Calgary Tower - downtown, revolving restaurant. http://www.calgarytower.com/

The Calgary Zoo-truley one of Western Canada's best Zoo's, many attractions and gardens. http://www.calgaryzoo.org/

The Glenbow Museum--Western Canada's Largest Museum(93000 sq.ft) http://www.glenbow.org/

Eau Clair Market/Princes Island-- http://www.eauclairemarket.com/

TD Square with its 4-acre Devonian Gardens rooftop garden park (downtown)

Restaurants:
My Favorites are:

The ol' spagetti factory, in Eau Claire.

any stampede breakfast during the week of the stampede.

Being a large city there are many many restaurants to check out. check out the "See" magazine for the top rated ones.
