Capetown, on the fly.

Capetown is brilliant. I'd expected it to be overrated in the way of popular places, but it really is great. Not so dissimilar to several Australian cities, but with the added electric edge you get as a foriegner travelling in a land widely reputed to be fundamentally dangerous. And it's beautiful, breathtakingly, 9-days-is-not-enough type stunning.

Favourite spots:
Hard to say really as I was admittedly madly in love at the time, and I'm sure wasn't seeing the world that clearly. Table mountain goes without saying, as does Bloubergstrand (from where those famous photos are taken). Lion Rock, the steep hill that sits adjacent to Table Mountain is great as a day hike...and better still if you're into paragliding. I was really impressed by the fit guys who'd run, yep, RUN up this hill when the wind was right, carrying their gear in a rucksack, unpack, set themselves, then launch off the mountain to lob at one of the upmarket coastal beach-cafes several kilometres downslope. Talk about combining exercise and pleasure.

What's really great:
From the noticeboard in the very friendly St John's Backpacker's hostel, we learned of a pizzeria close by that requires you to book 2 days in advance. This is actually true...and the pizza, the atmosphere, and the staff are all fantastic.

Accommodations:
St John's Backpacker's gets a nod from us, but it was the only one we stayed in. Because it's out of the way a bit I think you get better aqcuainted with the city, rather than caught up in the tourist swell.

Other recommendations:
The Cape Peninsula national park is a nice intro to harsh South African environments and unexpectedly abundant wildlife. If you were to hire a car to go there, you could loop back past a few wineries also.
