Surfing Senegal

Dakar travelogue picture
I had one week of holidays to enjoy. I wanted to surf and to meet a new culture. I didn't want to spend too much time in a plane. I went to Dakar, in Senegal and i had a great time. I saw some websites and got to know where the best waves were (near Dakar). One of them was right at Club Med's beach. I must confess i'm not pretty fond of Club Med's concept, but as i didn't have any info on where to stay, and i had only 6 days, i seemed like a good solution. In the first 3 days i didn't see any waves at all. As i woke up in the 4th day, i heard the waves cranking right in front of my room. I ran to the beach and there they were: perfect 6/9 ft righthanders on a beatifull reef break and only one surfer in the water. I got really good waves on the following days, wiyh max. 10 guys on the water. As it was February, i recommend a full wetsuit - the water is around 18ºC. The crowd was friendly enough. Watch first where the locals enter, and do the same. Beware of urchins

Favourite spots:
The surf spots, specially the one at Club Med. Isle de Gorée, Marché de La Tiléne, lac Rose, the city of Dakar.

What's really great:
The waves, the friendly people, specially the guide we recruited among the security staff at Club Med. Food at Club Med. Isle de Gorée (where slaves used to departure to Europe and America) - a beautifull place to visit and think about. Lac Rose - available in every postcard, but a real must see Marché de La Tilène - nothing better than a local market to know the local way of life.
Avoid staying all time at the hotel - and at Club Med its their main purpose. Use it to sleep and eat, since Dakar and its surroundings really worths a visit.
Find a local guide, tell him where you want to go (Lonely Planet has it all), and he'll find the best way to get there, either walking, by bus, in some friends car or even by boat.

Accommodations:
Club Med
Some surf camps at N'Gor

Nightlife:
There are many at Dakar. Senegalese love jazz and there are often some worls class events.
Check out for Youssou n'dour's live music bar in dakar.

Restaurants:
Sorry, but i only tried the one at Club Med...
