Delos - The Island that is a Museum

According to Greek mythology, Delos is the birthplace of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, and Apollo, god of healing, reason and light. They were born here to Leto, one of the many women Zeus managed to seduce.

Delos
Delos, an island holy to the Ancient Greeks, became a place of pilgrimage and worship to the Ionians. It was also mentioned in Homer's Odyssee. Later it became an important trading port in Hellenistic times and at one point it had over 30,000 inhabitants. Today it is one big open-air museum, with many of the ancient monuments and buildings remarkably intact. If you are interested in archaeology and/or Greek mythology this place is a must! To get to Delos take a boat from Mykonos: they leave daily (except Mondays) between 8am and 10am and return from Delos between 12noon and 2pm. I remember the price for the boat trip to be quite reasonable and entrance to Delos was only 3 Euros three years ago.

Favourite spots:

Where to begin? There is so much to see. The famous Lion Terrace lies next to the now drid out Sacred Lake, where Apollo is supposed to have been born. We've encountered a few peacocks here. The Theatre Quarter where you can still imagine the grandeur of the houses built by the wealthy. The Sanctuary of Apollo with the ruins of three temples.

What's really great:
The Theatre of Delos
The Theatre of Delos
The Theatre of Delos (2nd century BC) one accommodated 5,500 spectaors and it still feels very impressive today. Make your way right to the top and you are rewarded by spectacular views of Delos and the Aegean.

There is also an Archeological Museum on the island were many of the more fragile statues and pottery are exhibited. This is included in the entrance price to the island.

Restaurants:

There is a small cafe attached to the museum, but prices are quite high. Do bring enough water and sun protection, there is precious little shade on the island.

Other recommendations:
Mosaic in the House of Dolphins

Due to the island being very arid, many of the original mosaics in the houses are still pretty much intact and you'll find several of them dotted amongst the ruins.
