Hong Kong- Overwhelming but Worth the Confusion

My favorite city so far is Hong Kong, not including Lhasa. But, real, big developed city. It is quite unique and I don't think any other city in the world compares to it. Except maybe Detroit... haha just kidding.

Me in Hong Kong. Weather is really muggy and humid.

Spent a week in Hong Kong with two friends. We stayed in a hostel in Kowloon, took the ferry back and forth and back and forth and back and forth, had to be careful about crossing streets because we kept looking the wrong way, were hounded by this 'beep... beep... beep' emitting from the traffic lights, and experienced two police raids at the same club in three days. The police raid definitely has a little flavor of Detroit in it... ;-)

Favourite spots:
Notice each chinese man is wearing a shirt witha different shoe brand. Oh consumerism.

Our hostel in the creepy, ratty Marridor Mansion. Of course, my report isn't complete without Starbucks. We went to almost every one in search of the elusive city mug and went on a special starbucks holiday where they gave away FREE starbucks for one hour. Oh starbucks how I love thee. We road the tram up to see Hong Kong from its highest peak, absolutely gorgeous. Explored the night markets full of sex toys, fake louis vuitton and fortune tellers. And we saw the biggest, outdoor, sitting wooden Buddha in the world, THE WORLD.

What's really great:
Big Chinese Buddha
Big Chinese Buddha
We were there during the week so we got to go the hong kong racetrack. It's only open one or two days a week. It was a lot of fun. I'm damn good at picking horses but too broke and chicken to actually bet on them.

Sights:

The Peak Tram is fun, almost a rollar coaster and a great view. The big buddha is really great to see, but not so much after seeing Tibet. The night market was interesting. Check out Soho and the longest outdoor elevator in the world, THE WORLD. SOho was really cool to see. Hong Kong is great just to walk around in, both at night and during the day. Check out the racetrack too. Plus, disney world is open now, I'm sure thats fun.

Accommodations:
10pm, we walk into the dealership and they let us play with the cars. Crazy crazy hong kongers.

If you can afford to not stay at a hostel in Marridor Mansion, then stay somewhere else but for the price you can't beat it. Plus, its ghetto appeal has a kind of charm.

Nightlife:
Another shot of the misty city.

Our favorite spot, Cyber Club, was raided both times we visited. All of the foreingers were put politely into a private ktv room, given refreshments and snacks, while the rest of the club was pressed against the wall and searched for drugs, weapons, and proper visas/id's. They wanted to ensure no mainland chinese were sneaking out of China via HK. Or thats what I like to think in my creative head. I was, really drunk for both experiences so I am sure my rendition is quite colorful and full of flavor. Good, chinese techno, bad chinese dancers and a whole lot of alcohol.

Hangouts:
We thought we were so clever, holding Buddha in our hands.

Didn't attend pubs. Went bar hopping one night but nothing worth noting, just bar hopping.

Restaurants:
At the racetrack. We are a pretty hot group right? A pretty drunk group too.

We ate a lot of food. We had Italian, Brazillian BBQ, Philipino food, Fast food, Starbucks, Deli-France, Mexican, Hardrock and Dim sum. By now, you can sense that I'm not fond of Chinese food right? Since none of my reports mention Chinese restaurants. the dim sum kinda sucked and was way over-priced and we had to wake up early to catch it.

Other recommendations:
7-11 on every corner selling every item imaginable. Plus, in HK and all of China you can walk around with open alcohol containers therefore definitely drink and sight-see.

I don't think I should like HK as much as you do but it's a fine report
