Limerick, situated in the west of the island at the Shannon River, has about 100,000 inhabitants and is the third largest city in Ireland. It surely makes a good base for touring the mid-west of the country for it is close to the Cliffs of Moher and Galway for example, Dublin and Cork aren't that far away either, the city itself is not very spectacular though. Besides Limerick is known for its high crime-rate.

Improving my English was my main reason for coming to Limerick. Through the Internet I had found out about the English Language Courses offered by the University of Limerick. It all sounded really nice and soon it was clear that Limerick would be the place to go; originally I'd wanted to go to England but that's another story. Anyway, I haven't regretted my decision for Ireland at all even though, to be honest, Limerick was probably one of the worst places in the country (due its high crime-rate) I could have chosen, but well,.... UL, located in Castletroy, is a relatively new university and is supposed to be one of the best in the country; if not even THE best. It is not too big and thus it is easy to find your way around. It is a really beautiful campus with lots of green. I enjoyed my English Language Course at UL a lot and I regret not having stayed for a longer period.

Favourite spots:
The University of Limerick, the city centre, the castle is nice too (at least from the outside, the inside is rather disappointing in my opinion)

What's really great:
The University of Limerick and meeting people from all over the world there!

Sights:
King John's Castle, Milk Market, pubs

Hangouts:
me and my very first Guinness
me and my very first Guinness
The Locke Bar: this is a really nice pub at the Abbey River, next to the Potatoe Market and the city hall. You can sit either insides or outsides (only in summer of course). Outsides you'll miss the live Irish music though: everyone who can play an instrument can go there and join in with all the other musicians. By the way, it was in this pub where I had my very first Guinness!

Dolen's: The Dolen's is another pub with traditional Irish live music. In my opinion it's not as nice as the Locke Bar though. Besides it's located in a not so nice area of Limerick and you should only go there in a group; we were told that it's too risky/dangerous to walk through this area all alone.

The Kilmurry Lodge Hotel: This hotel also houses a nice pub; you can sit insides or outsides here too. No live music here though (at least there was none when we were there).

Other recommendations:

Limerick Greyhound Racing Track: if you've never been to a greyhound race before you might want to watch one when in Limerick.
This was the first time in my life I ever got to see a greyhound race. It seems to be very popular in Ireland and it's even a popular venue for collegues from work I was told.
When you buy your entrance ticket you get a brochure listing the latest of the dog's records to facilate your decision on which dog to bet on. If you decide to bet on a dog, the smallest possible amount is 1 Euro; if your dog wins you'll get 1.40 Euro lol. I decided to bet, just for fun, aaaaand ...... lost
:( lol The dog I put my money on had excellent records actually but didn't seem to be in good-condition on that day; it looked just horrible lol ;)
The race only takes about a minute or so. There's a kind of bait and all the dogs desperately try to catch it by running after it like crazy.
