The Royal City

In the middle of nowhere, at the Mekong river banks. This town is beautiful, charming, wonderful. And travelling to and from can be hilarious, although rather uncomfortable.

Favourite spots:
Riverbanks of the adjoining river to the Mekong, don't remember it's name. And some small red monastery in the non-central end of the main street. And our neighbour wat when the monks played volleyball while some guy was shouting prayers through giant loudspeakers.

What's really great:
Great natural beauty combined with amazing wat, temples, pagodas, castles, you name it... Is getting crowded though, and can be hard to get away from the traveller hordes in main season.

Sights:
The whole place is full of sights. A trip out to Pak Ou (caves containing at least 2000 buddha figures).

Accommodations:
Town's full of guesthouses. Most central ones are in the $6-12 range. Staid a bit out of town - Vong Vichit GH (there are two of them, namecopiers, think we staid at the copy, but it was fine), 25.000 kip a night for a large double in a converted French villa, sharing bathroom with everyone on the same floor (there were only two...). Very friendly owner speaks good French, cute English and serves free tea.

Restaurants:
None both cheap and very good, most on the main street. There's an Indian which is pretty decent, and the Scandinavian Bakery has a branch with okay - not very authentic - breakfast/lunch. Close to the post office an old man and his daughters run one of the many fruit juice cafe, and if you speak German, this place is worth a stop - he is Lao, but studied medicine in Rostock in the seventies, speaks decent German but no English, and has a lot of stories to tell.
