Madikeri is the HQrs. of Kodagu (Coorg) Dist. in Karnataka state, India. The town is about 7 hrs. drive from Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka. The Place is located in the Western Ghats in the south-west India. The place is famousfor plantations crops.

Madikeri travelogue picture
The town itself is a tourist attraction with its meandering roads, hillocks on one side and the valleys are on the other. The Omkareswara temple located in the heart of the town, was said to have been built by Lingaraja-II in 1820 apparently as a remedial measure for the sins he committed. The temple, unique in its style, was built in a mix of Islam and Gothic architecture, and appears like a mosque with four minarets in the four corners and a central dome. The presiding deity is Omkareswara (lord shiva). Half-a kilometer away from the temple, there is a place known as ‘Raja’s seat’ where the erstwhile Rajas of Coorg used to relax in the evenings with their families and enjoy the splendors of Sub-set beyond the Western Ghats. The place offers scenery of beautiful greenish valley, misty hills and meandering roads. An 8 Km drive from Madikeri, through forest and coffee plantations, took us to a beautiful location called, Abbey falls. The crystal clear waters splash down from a 70 ft. high rocky formation forms the water falls. There is no public transport to the place, but tourists have to arrange themselves for transportation by local autos and taxis. Tourists can hire vehicles or can walk from Madikeri to the water falls and back. One can enjoy the thrilling view of hill-slopes, deep valleys dotted with scarcely populated villages in the plantations. There are a few trekking points around the town, viz., Tadiyandamol (1908mt. MSL), Pushpagiri (1870mts.), Nishani Motte (1270mts.) and Kotebette (1620mts.). There are some tour operators/trekking organizers in the town. Among all the trekking points, Tadiyandamol is the most adventurous and exciting though tedious. The other points are also very good. The trek through hills, valleys, paddy fields and various plantations criss-crossed by numerous mountain brooks and mini-water falls was awe-some.

Favourite spots:
About 46 Kms. from Madikeri, there is a place called Talacauvery, which is birth place of river Cauvery. People consider the place as sacred because the river is the source of water for irrigation of lakhs of hectares of agricultural lands, drinking etc. The river starts in Brahmagiri hills as small pool of water and comes downto the ground level at Bhagamandala and merges with two rivulets called Kannike and Sujyothi and the confluence of the three rivers is called ‘Triveni Sangama’ means confluence of three flows. Most of the pilgrims will first take a holy dip at Triveni Sangama before visiting Talacauvery. The Bhagandeswara temple, on the banks of Triveni sangama, is worth seen. The Shiva Linga was said to be ensconced by Maharshi Bhaganda, and hence the name Bhagandeswara.

What's really great:
Apart from the beautiful, serene locations and lush green plantations, the people of Madikeri are most friendly. There is no cheating at the shops and in the travelling. One can purchase garden fresh spices like Cardomom, Pepper, coffee beans, tea etc. at cheaper rates.

Accommodations:
There are plenty of hotels available in the town which ranges form Rs.200 to Rs.2000 per day. Tourists can select the hotels as per their choice. There are a number of Holiday resorts in and around Madikeri. Home stays are also available in the country side.

Other recommendations:
There are other places of worth visit around Madikeri are 1. Dubare, 2. Nisargadhama, 28 km, 3. Nalkand Palace, 40 Km., 4. Nagarhole, 90 Km, 5. Irpu falls, 85 Km.,and 6. Hirangi Dam, 36 Km.
