Marmaris - Turkey

Marmaris is a really fast developing tourist centre on the Turkish Mediterrenean coast, with a European atmosphere. Situated in a natural bay, it has a wonderful boulevard with lots of bars and restaurants. Along the boulevard the so called gulets, big wooden sailing boats for chartering and day tours, are moored. In the last years, specially in the summer season it has developed a real night life scene, but without turning into the kind of Benidorm nightmare. Where the hotels are (see below) the is a beach, but I'm sorry to say it's not very attractive. The Turkish people are really friendly and helpful. Riding my motorbike through this beautiful country I was invited innumerable times to have tea by perfect strangers. Compared to most other countries along the Med, Turkey is cheap.

Favourite spots:
The boulevard with all its terraces, bars and restaurants. The city centre with all its shops. Just outside Marmaris is the shipyard where the wooden gullets are still built the same way as generations ago, without computers or even plans. Take a day trip on a gullet to the numerous wonderful quiet bays. Most carry surf boards and you get a wonderful meal on board.

What's really great:
The friendliness of the people. The food, specially the kebab and the Turkish bread with tzaziki, a cucumber, yoghurt and garlic sauce. Hotels are good and cheap.

Sights:
The market, once a week.

Accommodations:
Driving into Marmaris from the main road, you'll end up at the boulevard. Turn right. Along this stretch is where the hotels are located. Most of them are very fairly priced.

Hangouts:
The street right behind where the restaurants are is crowded with pubs and bars.

Restaurants:
Along the boulevard nearest to the marina.

Other recommendations:
The is a regular ferry to the Isle of Rhodos from Marmaris
