Mt Kilimanjaro from the air

The flight from Mombassa passes the awesome Mt. Kilimanjaro on its way to the Masai Mara airstrip. On arrival you are met by your game warden from one of the camps. Mine was the famous Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp where you are driven by your allotted game warden in open Land Rovers during your safari stay. Now this is camping in some style! Huge tents with full size beds, proper mattresses and a bathroom within the tent! It’s no wonder that this was the base camp for the filming of “Out of Africa”. Kichwa Tembo is situated at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment on the western border of the Masai Mara Reserve in south-western Kenya. Located in the exclusive western Mara, Kichwa Tembo lies directly in the path of the spectacular Great Migration when nearly 1.2 million wildebeest along with over 200,000 zebras migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya between July and October annually,

The Masai Mara is a Game Reserve and a National Park. Kenya is famed for its Masai warrior people. They are said to have originated in North Africa and migrated south to the fertile plains of Kenya and Tanzania several hundred years ago. The Maasai are a proud semi-nomadic cattle-rearing people with a fascinating culture. Prior to the arrival of the European colonists in the area of Kenya and the subsequent parcelling up and selling of land, the Maasai were true nomads. They moved their herds and settlements in tune with the rains which fed the pastures. In recent times, the Maasai of Kenya have largely abandoned their nomadic lifestyle, although they uphold their tribal traditions and dress codes in a manner scarcely touched by the 21st century. With a staple diet of milk and blood, cattle provide the daily requirements for the Masai, who eat meat only on ceremonial occasions.

The Masai Mara Game Reserve is often called simply The Mara which is the Maa word meaning Mottled - a reference to the patchy landscape. It is probably the best safari game viewing in the world and the so-called Big Five of Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Lion and Rhinoceros are all resident. The Big Nine residents of the Mara extend this to include Cheetah, Zebra, Giraffe and Hippopotamus. Other common sightings include Baboon, Wildebeest, Spotted Hyena and Warthog.

None - It is a National Park - The only nightlife is what you make with your fellow guests in your safari lodge. Next morning up at 6.00am and out before breakfast for more game viewing!
