Life around the Karl Johans Gate and Aker Brygge

  29 votes
I stayed in Oslo totaly three and a half months totaly in 2004. But I stayed partially in Oslo, both in winter, spring and summer. I hope to be there in fall next time.

Karl Johans gate
Karl Johans gate
Oslo is a very small city especially if you are living in Istanbul that has a population of around fourteen millions of people. Oslo has a main street called Karl Johans Gate, at one end Royal Palace is standing, and at the other end Central Station is standing. You can not miss your path, because all the ways are opening to this street. But I think it is better to use Oslo map, it is clear and you can walk in the city center easier. On Karl Johans Gate, you may see bars, cafes, some small shows presenting by interesting people, and also Oslo Church, standing strongly. The other place that is also in my subject is Aker Brygge. You may see a lot of people in summer season sitting outside, in ship-cafes, everwhere.

Favourite spots:
Akershus Castle
Akershus Castle
You may find a lot of museums in Oslo, and I think you can satisfy because of different topics. I went to Akershus Castle which was built in order to defense Oslo in 12th century by King Haakon Magnusson, and in this castle you may find a museum and a War museum. This museum is very interesting and has free entrance. You will go back to the 11 th century and come up to World War-2 in approximately one hour. Beside the castle you may find Resistance Museum that is telling you about the events during the World War-2. Akershus Castle has a very nice sight towards to Aker Brygge. Other interesting museums are Fram, that is telling you about the exploration of Arctic. In that museum I saw a real, huge ice breaker ship standing, it was incredible, and adventures of Amundsen. Next to this museum you will find Kon-Tiki that is telling about a travel from Peru through the Atlantic Ocean. Viking Museum, Norsk Folk Museum, Oslo City Museum are the other exciting places to see.

What's really great:
People are walking on the Frozen Sea
People are walking on the Frozen Sea
In winter, I especially liked the frozen sea. we were walking on it, somebody was making some drills and fishing, someones were skiing, it was very interesting. In summer, you will need thick curtains in your bedroom to sleep. Because sun rises at 04:00 AM and goes down at 11:30 PM. I have never seen such an event like this. I can not understand the sun route from rising to sinking. Next time I will share my trip to Bergen through amazing nature of Norway.

Sights:
Ski-jump in Holmenkollen
Ski-jump in Holmenkollen
Sights from Akershus castle, Aker Brygge were vey nice. If you want to walk in a nice park, I recommend you to go to Frogner Park. You will see sculptures that are made by Mr. Vigeland. The Radio Tower in Holmenkollen is also nice place to watch Oslo and skiing people everywhere. In winter you may watch ski-sports in Holmenkollen, especially ski-jump was very nice to watch.

Accommodations:
A view from Akershus toward to the Aker Brygge

If you will stay around 1 month and you are a group, it is better to rent an apartment. It will be more comfortable and cheap. The 5-stars hotel is not cheap here, so you had better to go to 3 or 4-stars hotels.

Hangouts:
Oslo Church on Karl Johans Gate
Oslo Church on Karl Johans Gate
I recommend you Uncle Donald Bar or Studenten Cafe, on Friday and Saturday, it was very hard to enter because of crowd. There are plenty of other bars and cafes on Karl Johans Gate.

Restaurants:
Central Station at the end of the Karl Johans gate
Central Station at the end of the Karl Johans gate
We were preparing meals mostly at our apartment, but if you want to eat outside, I recommend you Turkish or Indian Restaurants.
