Most people arrive at Keflavik and rush to Reykjavik, capital of Iceland. However, all we did was overnight there and went off early the next morning to discover the rest of Iceland. We only returned to Reykjavik the evening before our departure.
On the last morning, we left the Reykjavik city hostel rather late as we had gone pubbing the night before and returned to our beds only after 4am. Before leaving for the airport, I stopped by at the Hallgrimskirkja church for a view of the city. By then, we had driven 2250 kilometers in 7 days - quite a feat considering that is more than half the flying distance between New York and Reykjavik.
Favourite spots:
View over Reykjavik from Hallgrimskirkja Church
Iceland was my dream come true and I thank the good Lord for having blessed me with such a beautiful vacation. If I am compelled to come up with the top three spots of the week, they would be: (3) Krisuvik and Seltun geothermal area because we explored that on the morning of our arrival and were so overwhelmed by this powerful natural force, (2) Overnighting inside the Fjallasbak Nature Reserve because the landscape was truly out of this world and that was my only night sleeping inside the wagon under the midnight sun, (1) Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon where I saw for the first time in my life those huge icebergs and the family of seals who call the lagoon their home. Jokulsarlon was also the closest I have ever gotten to being within an arctic environment.
What's really great:
Hallgrimskirkja Church
Tasting whale meat at a restaurant adjacent to the IYH at Reykjavik Photographing lots of puffins on the bird watching cruise at Stykkisholmur Playing with the ultre lovable and tame Icelandic horses with their long flowing hair down the neck Tasting puffin meat with blueberry sauce at Husavik
Sights:
Whale meat
Hallgrimskirkja Church for a bird's eye view of Reykjavik and beyond
Accommodations:
Greenland and the thousands of icebergs
The IYH at Reykjavik is very clean, is reasonably priced and offers all the amenities you can imagine and hope for
Nightlife:
Dinner on Icelandair
Laugarvagur Street is the number one shopping and pubbing street in downtown Reykjavik
Hangouts:
Great icy lakes of North Eastern Canada
In my experience, the pub scene in Reykjavik is not exactly enticing. I was at Laugarvagur between 2330hrs and 0400hrs but the scene was pretty tame through the night and into the wee hours of the morning.

Thanks for the 7 days guide! Very practical. As I am planning a 2 weeks trip there this summer, probably I should consider to go there in June to enjoy 24 hours daylight and a 4WD for going to Landmannalaugar.
