Carnival in Salto

Salto is a nice small city built on a hill overlooking the Uruguay River in the northwest of Uruguay. The downtown has a pleasant colonial feel with some interesting buildings and well maintained parks.

Some of the port area
Some of the port area
Salto is the second largest city in Uruguay. It was build as a port on the Uruguay River which is the border between Uruguay and Argentina. The people are nice, and the city is clean and safe. The port area is mostly abandoned. It is pleasant place to wander around the old pier with three rusted out cranes and the beautiful viewpoint of the river. There is also a small port museum.

Favourite spots:
Salto Chico
Salto Chico
North of the city on the Uruguay River is a river resort area. There are a few small rapids called Salto Chico. The riverside has lifeguards and snack stands and many shaded picnic tables. The beach is mostly rock and red sand, and many Uruguayan familes have their lawn chairs in the river. There are also popular rock grottoes. The USA, we would call this a blue collar family resort. There is a very nice sidewalk along the river which goes most of the way from the city to the beach area.

What's really great:
Carnival
Carnival
Carnival in Salto is a family affair of music, food, and alcohol. The parade route is lined with plastic chairs and tables. Beer kegs tapped on every block, and vendors sell wine and food of great variety. There were numerous bands, most playing only drums, and many groups of teen age girls dancing in sequined bikinis. It is all capped off with a fireworks show.

Accommodations:
Hotel Concordia courtyard
Hotel Concordia courtyard
I stayed at the Hotel Concordia which is supposed to be the oldest hotel in Uruguay. It is an attractive colonial building with beautiful courtyard. The restuarant has a guitar and piano, and board games for customer use. I paid in February 2006 about $10 per night for a fan room with private bath including refrigerator, and cable television.

Daniel,
I just wish there was more. Beautiful photos especially the hotel courtyard. Yellow is typical of south America (at least that is what I think)

Rather short. If you mean to fill in other sections, you are better off waiting to publish until you have finished. As far as you go it is very good and encourages the reader/viewer to expect more.

A bit short but brilliant report, hope it can be expanded a bit oneday. I once promised my self that I would return to Uruguay (perhaps live there) oneday. This colourful report is a hot tip for travellers wanting to see something really different and a very friendly nation, just like I remember. Thanks Daniel!
