The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg

  18 votes
No visit to St. Petersburg is complete without a visit to the Hermitage. The experts say that if you were to spent a minute looking at each exihibit on display in the Hermitage, you would need 11 years before you'd seen them all.

From the 1760s onwards the Winter Palace was the main residence of the Russian Tsars. Magnificently loceted on the bank of the Neva River, this Baroqe-style palace is perhaps St. Petersburg most impressive attraction. Many visitors also know it as the main building of the Hermitage Museum. The green-and-white three-storey palace is marvelous and boasts 1786 doors, 1945 windows and 1057 elegantly decorated halls and rooms, many of which are pen to the public.
The Winter Palace was bult between 1754 and 1762 for Empress Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter the Great. Unfortunatelly, she died before the palace's completoin and only Catherine the Great and her successors were able to enjoy the interiors of Elizabeth's home. Today the Winter Palace, together with four more buildings arrenged side by side along the river embarkment, houses the extensive collectoin of the Hermitage. It is the larges art gallery in Russia and among the largest and most respected art museums in the world.

Favourite spots:
The museum was foundid in 1764 when Catherine the Great purchased a collectoin of 255 paintings from the German city Berlin. Today, the Hermitage boasts over 2.7 million exhibits and displays a diverse range of art and artifacts from all over the world and from throughout history( from Ancient Egypt to early 20th century Europe). The collection include works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian, a unique collection of Rembrants and Rubens, many French Impressionist works by Renoir, Cezanne, Manet, Monet and Pissarro, numerous canvasses by Van Gogh, Matisse, Gaguin and several sculptures by Rodin. The collection is both enormous and diverse and is an essential stop for all those interested in art and history.

What's really great:
Today the museum is creating its digital self-portrait to be displayed around the world. Computer technilogies enable the State Hermitage Museum to provide people from all over the wold with wider access to information about the museum and its
treasures.
