The Hague travelogue picture
The Hague is a beautiful city, situated some 50 KM's south of Amsterdam (which is the Capital of The netherlands) and 30 KM's west of Rotterdam (which is the world biggest harbour) has around 600.000 inhabitants. It is the residence of the country and so there is the country's administration and the royal palace as well. The city lies behind dunes and there is a lovely international beachscene. This place is called Scheveningen, which name only the Dutch seems to be able to pronounce well.

Favourite spots:

My favorite spots are the old-athmosphere terrace next to the new church right in the centre and the Lange Voorhout which is to be said the largest square in Europe (who sais the Dutch are so modest?) Thursday there's a very nice antiquemarket on this square which is covered with shady trees. In the evening everything is illuminated which makes the whole surrounding fairy-like. Also a nice spot is the harbour of Scheveningen where you can eat raw herrings with onions. This is a delicatesse!

What's really great:
Transport is adequate, frequent and comfortable. As a tourist you have to beware of pickpockets but that's wellknown at every place. I liked especially the Panorama Mesdag and give you the site where you can download the whole panorama (Scheveningen some hundreds of years ago) as a screensaver at www.panorama-mesdag.-nl. Also I liked very, very much the main market at the Herman Costersquare where you can buy food and things from the West-Indies to Indonesia. There you realize very well what a multi-cultural city The Hague is...

Sights:

The dunes, the harbour, the old canals i.e. the Bierkade which means beer-canal, Panorama Mesdag, the city-museum, the market place.

Accommodations:
The youth-hostel, close to the Hollands Spoor, the main station on the line Amsterdam-Rotterdam.

Restaurants:
The restaurant of the youth-hostel. At wednesday they have traditionally Indonesian food which is quite good. But the whole city is loaded with restaurants. I liked very much the Greek (mild) and the Indonesian (spicy) restaurants because there's a nice price-quality rate!
