relaxing in Kalamaki

  5 votes
Two weeks on Zante, Kalamaki well spent despite some dubious comments from friends (who had probably never been there). We did some research and decided to take the plunge. We're glad we did.

The resort of Kalamaki is situated in the south of the island, it is a semi rural area with a good selection tavernas and one or two music/sports/tv bars situated mainly along the main street. There are couple of beaches within walking distance of the main accommodation area, both of which are the nesting places of the loggerhead turtle and so are protected by not allowing motorised watersports or nighttime overflights. although the area pretty flat beware the local distance signs! 500mtrs is usually about 2/3miles. For the younger traveller Laganas is a short taxi ride away and is one long street filled with disco bars and takeaways, it also has a beach with pedalos

Favourite spots:
The outdoor pool area of Costa's apartments, a really relaxing place with a decent bar, good seating areas and reasonable prices for snacks and drinks. It is also set in the countryside so good views. The road down to the popular Crystal Beach is lined with many tavernas, all the ones we tried did not disappoint us. It is also worth taking a trip to Zante Town by local bus or taxi,(about 8/10 miles) for a change of scenery.

What's really great:
The local people are very friendly and not at all pushy. Most of the food served in the local tavernas can be seen growing in the area and if, like us, you are a fan of greek food, try the local specialities but avoid fish dishes unless you don't mind imported frozen fish with a hefty price attached. Do wander among the fields and have a chat with locals, they will often know where the best current tavernas are located and be happy to direct you.

Sights:
Zante Town for churches, gardens, shops and the harbour. Sunset from the western side of the island and the famed shipwreck at smugglers cove also in the west. Transport is essential to get to the last two.

Accommodations:
Costa's Studios and Pool Bar.Kalamaki

Restaurants:
There are too many to name but the best are on the main road, many of these have their own specialities as well as the usual steaks etc. A couple of steak houses, a Chinese restaurant and a pizza parlour can also be found here. There is a decent fast food takeaway at th eastern end of the main road, very close to a supermarket.

Other recommendations:
The beach areas near Kalamaki where it is sometimes possible to spot loggerhead turtles
