Southern Utah has a number of beautiful parks which are in close vicinity to the city of St George. I used St George as a base to see Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, and Snow Canyon State Park.

St George is a small city of around 70,000 people. It warm climate and scenic location attracts many tourists and retirees. The city is very clean with numerous trees, and grassy areas along the broad streets. The green grasses of town stand in stark contrast to the desert surrounding the town in every direction.

| Favourite spots: |
|
Zion National Park is a very popular park with a bus service ferrying tourists to the popular attractions within the park. I had to rent a car in St George to visit the park though because there is no public transport there, and only very expensive day tours from St George. I rented a car for three days and also visited Cedar Breaks National Monument and Snow Canyon State Park which are also not accessible by public transport.

| What's really great: |
|
The Dixie Stampede rodeo was on for three nights while I was in St George. It is nice western style rodeo and was very entertaining. However, the sheer number of advertisements between events was astounding. The only previous rodeo I had seen before was in Australia and it was much more fun because events flowed quickly along and were not constantly paused by commercial breaks.

The city square park is very nice with nice statues, and small water play area for children. An attractive Mormon Tabernacle offers guided tours, and a public library.

| Accommodations: |
|
I stayed at the Motel 6. It was basic and clean. My room had a beautiful view over the city and the motel had a nice small swimming pool. Because it is a popular tourist town there is a great number of hotels, some even cheaper than the Motel 6.

| Hangouts: |
|
Pioneer Park is a nice city park on the hill overlooking the town to the north. It is a pleasant place to spend time rock hopping on big red boulders. It seems to be a popular picnic area. The only negative is the many shards of broken glass all over.

| Restaurants: |
|
There are numerous restaurants in every price range. I mainly went to fast food places which were all nearby my hotel. There does not seem to be any centrally located grocery stores. There are grocery stores near the airport to the west of town, and around the shopping malls off the interstate east of town. Self-catering therefore is not ideal if you do not have a car.

|
Dixie State College has an attractive campus in town. I used the free internet in the library there. It often has theatre productions and sports events there.
