It is great to have your input, Hugh. We always appreciate having more voices. That is what makes this feature of our site so interesting.

Martin, I believe your last system could be fine, also. However, along the train of thought that Misty brought up, could we find some method of rating that would incorporate the three star-rating systems that you have proposed and still allow for personal taste in subject matter? I think that we are on the proper track.

When I rate pictures, which isn't very often, I tend to use guidelines something similar to what Martin has.

* Poor

** Fair

*** Average

**** Superior

***** Amazing

I do make some exceptions if the subject matter is more interesting. While I like landscape shots, I also think cultural pics make for good photography. After all, I seen so many mountain and/or lake pictures, they all tend to blend into each other. But a picture of a group of aboriginals dancing or a tiger feeding or even a funny street sign can be far more unusual and interesting IMO.

When I first joined, I didn't realize that Globosapiens was going for professional-type pictures. That's the biggest reason why I'm not a premium member. I have maybe 2000 pictures (or more) of my travelling throughout Asia and North America, but most of them have my ugly mug, or those of friends in them. Several great pics (IMHO) I've posted were rejected as they were considered to have 'personal content' in them.

That's fine by me, but it just means that my picture archive of stuff I can contribute shrunk from 2000 to maybe 150, which is only a month's worth of uploading....so it's not really worth it for me to step up and pay for the extra service, which I wouldn't be able to use. I guess my contribution will have to be in Travel reports and my travellog.

James,

I am unaware of the photos that you submitted and that were rejected for "personal content," and, I do not believe that "professional" status of photographs is what is being discussed. I am certain that all of us have had photos rejected for one reason or another (I know that I have). I think that Martin is trying to help all of us to understand why certain photos are rated at certain levels and how to improve the quality of those photos that we post.

We all have seen pictures of "my brother" or "my father" and other such postings. Those are not necessarily "travel" or travel-related photos. As you mentioned, a picture of indigenous people in lands with which many of us are unfamiliar have a high degree of interest. However, I do not see the value of a picture showing two or three fellows drinking in a pub.

Don't let opinions discourage you from continuing your contributions. We can all benefit from the mutual dialog and intercourse.

As I mentioned previously, if I’m not too keen on a picture I do not rate it, therefore when I rate a picture, I tend to used these guidelines:

***** Excellent shot (I could stare at this all day)

**** Great shot (I wish I had taken it)

*** good shot (I like this)

** somewhat good (this is ok)

* average (are you sure?)

No star means it didn’t make the grade or it didn’t produce the minimal requirement. Mostly I tend to think of personal shot in this capacity.

I’m sure this is digressing, but I’m inclined to agree with Bootlegga, I was going to become a premium member but, realised that my pictures are not of that quality and mostly I like them because I was actually in the location and not because they are necessarily good pictures. I was a little intimidated, so now I carefully select pictures to upload, sometimes I get it right and sometimes I don’t. But at least I’m having fun doing it. ((*_*))

I like mistybleu's rating system the best.

I agree with Vicki-Krista too. I use basically the rating system at the top but very often add or subtract a star (even two) according to the originality and/or "feeling" of the picture, certainly artistic values. Never though, who took the pic or what camera they have. Really, its mostly SUBJECT and FOCUS that counts, the rest a complicated personal opinion about a picture.

Thanks Martin for bringing this subject up again. With GLOBO growing, the rating scheme is our only chance of sorting thousands of pics (and reports) automatically according to relavance and quality. Good rates float to the top of lists and the trash sinks to the bottom. I wish more members would RATE AT ALL, no matter how, so that this system becomes more efficient. The true average rating of a pic/report is only after, say, 20 votes!

NB: 95% of my submitted pics were taken by a simple cheap automatic compact camera. I'm delighted, even after scanning from prints, that some have rated above *** and delighted to have found a website that rates also on originality and adventure instead of professional poster-format quality. Further, GLOBO has shown me (through the rating system) which of my pics members like and dislike, surprisingly very different to what I thought of my own pictures! Only with PREMIUM membership was that possible, showed my what pics I should rather not upload, and how I can take better pictures in the future...

Actually Russ, I think Globo's standards for pictures and the rating system go hand in hand. If there is a unwritten but understood line of thinking that the pictures need to look like Dansan's to do well, then a lot of amateur photogs might just decide to be content with 3 star ratings for the majority of their pics.

This might in turn have a negative impact on some people uploading pictures. I don't think anyone likes getting 2 stars, much less 1. I know I don't.

As for rejected photos, I've had a few of my favourite pictures rejected. One was of myself and my friend in front of a castle in Japan, another was of my friends and I in front of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Personal yes, but travel related definitely.

The way I get around this is to put them in my travel reports. That way, members can still see what I think are great pics and I can post them on the site. I'm guessing with the scores I'm getting on my reports that members agree with me at least a bit.

Hi GLOBO's

Russ:

I think what Bootlega is refering to when talking about rejected pictures is what is the topic here:

http://www.globosapiens.net/topic-suggestion-for-upholding-higher-standards-in-photography_29_1099_0000.html

Then pictures were rejected. This is not longer active.

Thanks misty and James for bringing in their rating system!

The point of this thread is producing a generally approved rating scheme. I would like to post it in the FAQ section eventually as guideline for all GLOBO's...

You see the rating differs a lot:

Misty: *** good shot (I like this) ** somewhat good (this is ok)

James: *** Average ** Fair

Rudi: *** technically good, focused, colour, contrast, interesting ** the mediocre pic, good title and description or technically ok

Martin: *** average / *** good shot ** below average /** average shot

I really think what we should talk about, is how we rate bad pictures (pictures we don't like, pictures that are not in context, pictures of yourself, blur mess, etc).

Misty and Rudi say don't rate at all. I don't agree there, when you don't rate there's no message you deliver. So when you want to rate you have to rate *. Unless Andy lets us rate no star at all in future....

Basically it all comes down to where do we begin, in order to decide how many stars mean what.

What do you think?

Martin

Misty

Im think you are being way to modest when stating your pictures don't reach the standards wished for on this site.

Two of your Machu Pichu pictures are rated very high and show amongst the 20 highest rated pictrues so far....

Anyway you all really should consider going premium. I didn't upgrade because I could post more but because I could see more. The picture quality you see is much better when you're premium. And it's not a lot of money!
