this idea was brought up awhile ago..that would be a cool idea, to make your own screen saver. Where someone can pick and choose whatever they want for it.
However, one thing I'm beginning to notice is that this site is becoming quite the saturated with alot of pics that have nothing to do with travel. They are just pics of flowers, family, professional shots etc. They really have nothing to do with travel. I think pics like that belong on a photo site like webshots.com or photoworks.com and other free sites where you can make albums and upload thousands of pics. You can just type in a search word and get thousands of pics of what your looking for.
The pics are getting off topic and globosapiens is straying from the "true quality" of photos for "travel". People are using them just to get points. This is clogging up the site and making it difficult to sort through the crap. Same as with the forums. It seems that it's all about points, not quality.
I am not a professional picture taker but I think I do have some good pics to share with other "travellers" not as a "photographer" but a person genuinely interested in a good shot of something different from my own culture or, of something spectacular or weird looking from somebody elses.
I don't care for the point system with pictures either. When your only aloud the 10pics per month. People are forced to pick and choose the most unique pics they have. When you have unlimited amounts you can upload all the crap you want, and that cheapens globosapiens.
Personally I could care less if if I get a * for a pic or not. I thank people who can help me make my pics less fuzzy (I have yet to correct this on my site) but really, does a * prove anything?? Did I not show you something that you probably haven't seen before if you never went to that country?
Isaacmolina made a comment on points to Florina Greece "..can I give you only 4 points because somebody already gave you 2 points, and Globo computer does not allow me to give you 5 points"
The person who gave 2*may not have liked the "quality" of the pic but I, like Isaac, like the pic just for the nature of it. It's something spectacular that I would probably never see in my land.
anyway. Before people get all gung ho about making themes and lists and everything else... lets clean up the site and weed out the pics that obviously don't belong... Lets get Globo back into being an informative travel site made by travellers for travellers.
That's my 2 cents and sorry for the rant it's been on my mind alot.
ciao
Tashi

I think it is good idea, but i would rather like to see pictures compare to albums as they are slow and time consuming ,if some one having high sleep net connection then its good.
How about we would have an automated slideshow of the currently on our screen selected pictures?
@tashy
Being one of the pioneer members of GLOBOsapiens I am keen to listen to what your saying. It's people like you that put the community in motion and made sure it got a good start. I haven't been around when pictures used to be approved or rejected, am I right to think you are whising to go back to these customs?
The point system is about quality in the first place. If you think this picture is good, interesting and travel related give it the highest possible vote if you think it's really not about travel just give it a low vote. If everybody does so we will have the pictures, that are generally liked among the first ones of a selected country/region...
You are talking about "true quality" of photos for "travel", can you be more specific on this item?
In general you seem to like "exotic" pics best. Exotic meaning pictures of places and situations that you don't encounter daily in Edmonton. A picture of a pagoda must be more interesting to you than a church looked at it the other way round for a Chinese a church might be more interesting than a pagoda... so it's always a personal point of view.
Look at those two pictures for instance, it's only the hair and skin color that makes the difference between those two pics. And the fact that one was presumably taken in uganda and one in norway... we have to believe the poster that this picture really has been taken where it's claimed.
According to your statement, I guess that the boy from uganda would be more the thing you look forward to see.
The fact that this site is in English doesn't automatically mean that modern western civilised 1st world sights are not as interesting as a dentist under a tree in the third world. In some parts of the world this would be normal day to day pictures. It's just sad that those people usually don't have access to the site.
What I really like here on GLOBOsapiens is the diversity of people to meet, in the first twenty members on the list we have:
11 europeans
4 north americans
1 australian
1 oceanian
3 asian
10 native english speaking people
Diversity, is what GLOBO makes so special!
- lets clean up the site and weed out the pics that obviously don't belong...
- Lets get Globo back into being an informative travel site made by travellers
- for travellers.
So why don't you start by getting a list together with those pictures that obviously don't belong and present them to everybody else like that others could get a better sense of what is liked here.
Just my 2cts ;-)
Have a great day
Martin

Well put Martin, agree 100%
If we kept only exotic travel photos we would need to delete about 90% of the gallery, about 22000 images. No need then for “THEMES”, GLOBO whould then have only two themes;
- landscapes
- newly discovered villages
The idea that one day we will have SUBJECT based galleries is marvellous. This though is technically very challenging, requiring a LOT of expensive and time-consuming programming effort. I see it possible not now but within a few years. Andy? Till then the best all members can do is to title and describe their pictures properly so that the themes can be filtered in a eventual internal search engine properly.
Tashy, again, we must stress how important the rating system is to AUTOMATICALLY sort out the trash. It is very hard to find * star pictures a few weeks after their uploading because the sink into the deepest pits of lists and archives. ie.
- main gallery list
- members gallery list
- country profiles
- destination pages
- theme lists themselves
They are still always there for weak reference to a place and do not disturb me. I read a newspaper or magazine from the front to back, the best are always the title articles.- the classified smalls are at the back! If members don't use the rating system then how can this work properly. We cant manually sort what is best and what is trash. With the rating system - GLOBO CLEANS UP ITS SELF! I am sad some think it is unimportant. It is democratic, essential, not perfect but works.
The THEME thing I think is important. I helps compare specific travel interests and to WIN members and to make friends within the community. We all travel for different reasons and pleasures. This might be business, holiday, adventure, sport, hobbies, yes, even family reasons or some even for sex or self inflicted danger. I liked Martin's original first two THEMES; "Eiffel Tower" and "Night Photography", to compare photographic styles and settings. With “THEME: Reflection” a series started. Tashy will say “reflection” has nothing to do with travel but I think around 50% us members travel to photograph, not snap just while we are travelling!
Ironically, THEMES are automatically sorted too by popularity,
Tips: the theme must be travel related but not too much like simply mountains or sunsets or lakes. The theme should be co-moderated that a list of starting at 20-30 eventualy shows the best 50-100 rated of its kind are found. Bad quality or low rated pics should not be included unless the theme is of a very rare type (less than 50 pics). For URLs, omit the "http://" part to simplify the link. Long titles make the list look messy but it is the picture that counts. The fist entry is (as others) editible. The host should maintain a "best-of" list at the header but this is not essential, updates or comments or discussions and revisions can be submitted later in the thread.
Whether these become screensavers or slide-shows or just discussion-groups, I challenge members to support the “GLOBOthemes” till we get technologically more advanced. Anyone needing tips or help to starting a new “THEME” can “contact” me or simply follow the examples.....

This photo is not travel related and doesn't deserve 5* as it was given by one GLOBIE, only because this Globie lives in the same place as the GLOBIE who posted it.
If we are allowed to upload an indefinite number of photos, the quality will certainly diminish. If we are allowed a set number of some 15 photos per month, we are very careful and will chose only our best ones.
I don't think it was GLOBO's intention to be a place where photos can be stored. It is a place where we can show our best travel related photos.
This could be a shot of a flower as long as the title and caption show that this is a special flower in a certain country.

@ marianne
With the statement:

I was already quoting ta-shy about deleting the unwanted pics.
I don't agree with you that a limitation of 10 to 15 pics per month would improve the posted quality. For instance the example you mentioned in your post which really is not suitable for our community as we agree is of a new member who only uploaded 6 pictures so far and in 5 of them he is shown...
it's those newbies that haven't got a clue what is going on here and don't bother to check it out, that are posting these unwanted pics. There was the same problem a few months ago with a member who posted 8 pics and in every single one he was shown...
A limitation to 10 pics wouldn't have helped in these cases and as in so many others before.
Unless we have an agreed on content, that is wished for, and some moderators for the picture galleries with rights to delete those unwanted stuff we only have andy to contact in these cases if we want to bother him and take away his time. The only other possibility is vote them accordingly and they'll go down to the bottom of the galleries (for the pic you mentioned it was unlucky that somebody voted it not accordingly before.)
When we all truly vote for the best quality we'll end up with pages of great stuff that will attract more of it. At the moment when you click trough the first pages of our main gallery you will have plenty of phantastic shots. I think a first time visitor might be much impressed and decide to stay on therefore...
Just some thoughts of mine
Have a great day

Photo moderators would be an excellent idea. This way newbies will know what to post and what not to post and will realize that GLOBO is not a place to post family photos.
For the time being would it be wise to send a private message to those posting family pictures and ask if they can delete them and post proper travel pictures?
But then who are we to censure.

You were postive of the wife being in the picture, me not...
And if you look at the other pics he uploaded it's mainly me or my wife in front of...
if she were doing someting or if there were more people why not have people in the picture, but I really don't like those people parading/saluting in front of objects.
what bothers me though is the following statement of ta-shy:
They are just pics of flowers, family, professional shots etc. They really have nothing to do with travel. especially the part professional shots
what do you mean? show us those pics that you wouldn't like to have here that are professional shots. As said above there is a great diversity of people here on GLOBO and there are different reasons for travelling as rudi rightfully stated. I dont' think that any professional photographer would be happy to give away his treasures for free here on the site, he would sure try to sell them as it is his profession. I think that most of us really are only entusiasts some a little more skilled than others ;-)
have a great day
