Hi GLOBO's

After all this talk about picture quality lately Andy did rename this forum to Travel Photography, so that we could have a place to talk about specific pictures...

Russ and I have been in contact about picture quality quite a lot and we were talking about this specific picture of him:

http://www.globosapiens.net/bear495/picture-angel-falls-3751.html

Let me quote Russ here

"I remember that after 5 ratings, it was rated 4.8. However, after 9 ratings it was 3.86. That means that someone had to rate it as a 2 somewhere."

We thought it could be interesting to have your views about this picture, as a start on this picture talk now.

Have you already rated this picture?

What did you like?

What could have been done better?

How did you come to your rating, what was most important here in order to conclude the rate you made?

please feel free to comment on this one we hope to get a lot of feedback and we all could learn a lot for future shots....

Please if somebody else is not sure why a picture didn't live up to the quality standards asked here do make a new thread in this forum with a header like on this post!

The pic is of the famous Angel Falls, highest in the world, drop more than 1000 meters, knowing that, explains the disturbing clouds. Must have been a good day, compare with www.ramproductions.com/wj2/317.jpg

The pic was cut from the classical 8x5 or 5x8 format and contrast is slighly too high. The sky is not clear. That makes ***. Because pics of these falls are rare, comparing with Niagara, Victoria or Iguassu an extra star makes my rating ****

Thanks, Boris, but I actually had the photo developed as an 8 X 10 when I returned from the trip. I knew that I had a nice shot on a clear day, so I went to the best person I could find to develop the roll of film. It was taken with a Minolta 35mm using Kodak (400) film.

The journey to get the photo was awesome. My wife and I flew into the village of Canaima and stayed overnight. We hired a native guide and his dugout canoe to take us upstream. We canoed all day, camped on Isla Mosca, canoed for two more hours the next day, then arrived at a small path through the jungle. Then we travelled for two hours through the jungle before getting to this special viewing area, El Mirador.

I can only hope to have the same opportunity again.

Its funny how members rate and yet dont want to comment here. Only 3 postings in 2 days, I suppose people are afraid to critisize and yet the object is to discuss and get some input which will help others. More comments please! How about anotherone Martin, to run parallel with this?

Hey Russ

When reading the first answer of Rudi an Idea came to my mind.... Search the net for other pictures of this world wonder... Said so did so... Google picture search "angel falls" I got plenty of images to compare them too... Perhaps we can get in the mood.

I found out taking a great shot of this subject is very hard, light is not very good. I assume that the spot where you took this shot was somewhere surrounded by the jungle which makes you stay in a dark place, and the falls are mighty high which makes you point straight up to the sky that is clear and bright... What you need now it the right setting of shutter speed and aperture value which I cannot tell you as I'm not a professional. With my two Canon Cameras I can do automatic exposure series, When I press the shutter once my camera makes 3 pics with different av values. One as metered, one a little underexposed, one a little overexposed. Sometimes the normal metering of your camera is not what you need and then you have to try other settings, like that.

Furthermore when Water is falling this high there is a lot of humidity in the air wich can make a blur impression in the image.

some of the better pictures I found with the google search:

http://gosouthamerica.about.com/library/weekly/nangel.htm (the one with the rainbow)

http://www.venezuelatuya.com/gransabana/saltoangeleng.htm

http://www.geodyssey.co.uk/images/p0503.jpg

http://www.nomadom.net/images/venezuela/Canaima/canaima21.htm

A whole site with pictures:

http://www.angel-falls.com/Picture/index.html

When Im thinking about this picture I try to imagine why did you want to take this shot? What were you thinking and feeling when pressing the shutter.

I suppose the mightyness, the sheer hight, the mass of water was impressive... thats what you could try to capture. The true spirit of the place.

I think in this picture the hight and watermass is more to the spirit www.nomadom.net/images/venezuela/Canaima/canaima21.htm

(the one with the rainbow) has more of the humidity in the picture

http://www.geodyssey.co.uk/images/p0503.jpg make them look higher than in your pic.

What's my conclusion now... hmmm

a wider zoom (more sky), Portrait format, Going somewhere closer to the falls and getting a steeper angle, going somewherer further away to get a better impression of the size...

Just some thoughts.

btw. I haven't rated it so far.

More thoughts

Russ, I had some more thoughts

There is just a bit too much white around in the corner and the image is not so crisp and clear it's a just little blur...

There's nothing else you can do about the clouds than wait at this place until they go away....

The waterfall would look more crisp when you captured it with a very fast shutter speed like say 2000 or even better 4000 of a second, this is really depending on your camera gear. But with such a fast speed you would be able to recognize single water drops instead of a thick white line in the picture.

http://www.globosapiens.net/jeanlouis/picture-herisson-river-waterfall-11285.html

All the above pictures are displaying more details of the water they all must have been shot with a faster shutter speed than yours.

You surely know that the shutter speed is depending on the available light... so what enables you to take these speeds have high speed film (ISO 400), have high power lens (enough light passing through), wait until the light is better, change place...

Just some more thoughts anybody agrees or has more tips.

Thanks, I will continue to make an effort to improve. BTW, please note some of the other photos in this website:

http://www.nomadom.net/images/venezuela/Canaima/canaima21.htm

Whoever took these photos had an awesome adventure. I am envious. We need to get his/her input on our site. I would love to have this person post some of the photos (and stories) on our site.

OK, what next? Any other photos that we can discuss?

Hi Russ

I really think the picture you linked is one of the best of angel falls, it's very dramatic youll think the water falls down on you, you really fell how high it is...
