Hello -

It's quite funny to have one of my pictures talked about. But it's flattering, too, so thanks for your words on this forum. I'm Dominic Hamilton, the author of that pic of Angel Falls. Pleased to be here!

It's funny that that shot should come up, since I sold it to a tour operator who said 'It feels like you're right there' - and I guess that is the impression one gets. It was taken on my Contax Zeiss 28-80mm, and must have been wide open. I had my tripod with me, so it will have been at 22, which is perhaps part of its impact too: it's very, very sharp!

I had a look at the other image and it's good. I'm confused as to the format, since it's not rectangular. It seems to have been cropped. I think it would have benefitted from more verticality to give the idea of height. But then, if you look at:

There's no verticality there at all, and yet it still feels big. Maybe it's just the wide-angle which brings the viewer in - as opposed to a zoom from far away. There's nothing like getting up close. I'm sure that's was advice I read somewhere on the art of photography,...... : )

The other photo is also over-exposed on the clouds. As Mortimer pointed out, it's always good to bracket stops, or half stops, either side of what the camera says is the light. Don't trust the machine, trust your eye! Or better still, trust in probability - take more photos..!

As for the water that was discussed, I've nearly always found photos of waterfalls taken with long exposures to be more compelling, romantic and engaging than short shutters. You need to take your tripod with you, but I think they work best.

Anyway, thanks all for picking out my photo, and I wish you luck in your photos and health on the road.

Regards,

Dominic
