Clive,

Thanks a lot for you detailed feedback. I will soon write a second version.

Thanks for the gram suggestion, your sentence is so much better. (English is not my first language)

We have another discussion running in the interntalk in the forum about photos. It is a restricted forum and members need to have 500 points and have been a member for one month. I hope you can join us on the 6 April (when you have been a member for one month)

Dear Marianne

You have put up a valuable guide. Wished it was up when I first joined Globo!. I might have to go back and edit some of my earlier reports!

Perhaps you can stress it in your guide, that it would be worth adding pics to one's report as it generally makes the report more pleasing and a joy to read.

Your guidline is a good one, but it is just that, a guideline and I think all of us need to look at it that way.

Each of the categories as far as I'm concerned is just a 'suggested' topic for discussion. In the past, I have used either the Nightclub or Pub section as a "Sights II" when I have visited a major world city like Paris, Tokyo, or London. I find that the Sights section is too small too give most major cities justice. I mean everyone talks about the Eiffel Tower and Louvre when they visit, but that alone takes up usually 1/4- 1/3 of the 1000 characters you have. If you want to discuss something else like a museum or favourite place (like a park), I find that I run out of room, especially as I try to include as much info about a destination as possible.

I have been working on my Paris report for almost a year now and for major cities like that, it is very hard to describe places where other Globos haven't been to. Yet, I also feel that people would look at a report on Paris without mention of the Eiffel Tower as odd. So in the end it is a balancing act when writing a report.

Theoretically, it would be possible to fill an entire report on almost any major city in the world only by describing restaurants or bars (even Edmonton has hundreds of each), so I generally limit those to only a couple and spend the majority of my effort on places to see and things to do while at a destination.

And I don't generally agree with Clive's comment that the photo in the Hotel section should be of a hotel. Personally, I'd rather see the view from the hotel or even one of a carnival, as was mentioned. I'm sure that all of us have seen plenty of hotels in our lifetime and one more hotel picture doesn't necessarily make a report better (IMHO). Push comes to shove, I prefer a picture of locals, the beach, the zoo or just about anything else is better. If you want to add the photo of the hotel, I think it should be done in the Travel Tips section.

Hi Marianne

I was looking for something different but came across an older item I posted about reports:

Hope it helps

Martin,

Thanks a lot for your link. I intend to write a second set of guidelines about the 'technical' side of uploading reports.

James,

Thank for you feedback.

I agree when you say that there is not enough room to do a city justice. Yet I like the restriction of number of characters. If they are not there we will get very long reports and it is a well known fact that text on the internet must be short and succinct. In GOBO's early days we had no word restrictions and it led to very long entries

e.g http://www.globosapiens.net/travel-information/Beijing-668.html

Word limit also ensures that description are to the point and not endless eulogies about a place in which the same theme is repeated over and over again. No one wants to read such kind of reports.

I don't agree that a Paris report without mentioning the Eiffel Tower would be odd. After all, info about the Eiffel Tower is in any guidebook. It is far better to describe places, sights, museums etc that are not in the guidebooks (or mentioned very briefly), because if you write about these lesser known places, GLOBO will be unique and distinguish itself from other travel sites

When can we read your Paris report?

I found Martin's quoted message very helpful early on and I think most of it still is. However the last stages obviously couldn't take account of improvements which Andy has made since.

The minor point is that it is no longer true that only parts of the report where you have inserted content can be changed later. Other sections can now be added. The major point is that reports uploaded are invisible until the author chooses to publish. Authors need to be advised not to publish reports where they intend to add picures or additional content. Once it's published, it will be rated and it's not possible for people to rerate after it has been edited.

@ david

That's what came to my attention too when looking through the text again. I will try to correct the changes over the weekend :-) Thanks again for reminding.

One of those posts in the forum that needs attention, just as an example for other moderators.

Thank you Marianne for the guidlines which are sure to help all members. What you have done is perfect but two very small points still worth pondering:

1) The report "MUST" (not "should") be YOUR OWN WORK [can be eg. dictated too].... you "MAY NOT SIMPLY" ( not "there is no need to") copy and paste from other websites [STOP, possibly ommit "we can read it there....] Possibly add: "we want to avoid copyright enfrigements or problems, this also regards pictures."?

2) The paragraph NIGHTLIFE must include primarily the word "clubs" since that is what past reports described here.
