I just now saw that you list Washington D.C.under Virginia. It is right in between Virginia and Maryland but it isn't part of either. It is a district. The District of Columbia is striving for statehood, but it is still considered a district. [ This Message was edited by: ehs1193 on 2006-03-15 01:25 ] --- Wunderkind

Sorry - for some reason I missed all this. I don't mean to sound patronising but one of the great things about this site is the truly international character of its membership and persomally I like a bit of 'funny' English to remind people that it is NOT based in the UK or the USA.
Having said that, one thing does grate on me every time I see it. When you have established the place for a travel tip, the site produces a default of 'accomodation.' I did check that this is not an American word and it's certainly not a UK English one. The correct spelling is 'accommodation.' No need to feel bad about it, Andy. When I was teaching, I once typed out [painfully] a long form for the principal to sign, inquiring about 'accomodation.' He took one look at it and asked me to redo the whole thing with the correct spelling. I've never forgotten it since and it might be why 'accomodation' grates! --- Grieve not for that which you cannot do but rejoice in that which you can.

Also, I'm not used to calling a "state" a "province" When it says "which province is it in" or "which province do you live in" or when you use the word "province", I use it for Canada or something. I don't use it for the U.S. I use the word "state" in the U.S. I'm hoping there might be a way to use the word "state" when talking about the United States. --- Wunderkind

Yes, "accommodation", also specially without the "s", this word somehow was funny even though my english is not that good, agree David? :-)
Nathan thanks for the "D.C" correction. That got members from there and staff gulping - not easy to fix, but they must eventually. American english has become very popular worldwide because of internet. This is a pity for europeans but must be accepted. "State" is therefore today a better word than "province". In germany we have "Bundesländer" so the text should say atleast "state/province"!
Another very difficult one needs programming, not a spelling mistake: the LHS (left-hand-side) menu claims "Online". If GLOBO wants to promote itself and show that others are linked to it, this must be "Members Online" or simply "Logged on". About 30% of my time i'm ONLINE at GLOBO but it does'nt show. I guess that about 50-500 are online looking at GLOBO pages at one time. Some sites have a counter for this called "current guests". I think if we could show this it would make us realise how many MORE webusers are really "online" at GLOBOsapiens!
There are a few more....... later.....
Please report to make GLOBO better!
RR
P.S: If the LHS menu is ever changed, I recommend both the fields to be increased to 10 and the options expanded. [ This Message was edited by: rangutan on 2006-03-18 20:40 ] --- Rudolf "Rangutan" Graspointner

My only real comment on this is regarding 'Hangouts", which used to be Pubs I believe. I agree with the change, but is there any reason we need both "Nightlife" and "Hangouts". To me that is one in the same. I've always wondered why we had both a pub section and a nightclub section...
I'd prefer a section on a different topic, like maybe any one of "Markets" or "Museums" or even "Activities". I realize it's a departure, but I find it hard to describe the bigger cities of the world with ony "Sights". And I believe "Sights" can really range from markets to museums to monuments to about a million other things. I usually wind up replacing one of "Clubs" and "Pubs" with "Sights II" anyways.
Other than that, the obvious solution would be to expand the "Sights" section on future reports and eliminate the redundancy of "Hangouts". --- "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." – Mark Twain

Hi everybody,
thanks for the lot of replies. I am aware that there are still spelling mistakes on the site, but like Davidx said it's not UK or US english :-) It's the english of a typical traveler (that would be me :-). So please don't be angry if there is an accomodation or anything similar at GLOBO. I could now go ahead and change every single mistake somebody will find at GLOBO, but that would take so much time that I could not look for the other things. So I hope that you guys will close one eye :-)
About the provinces, state, district thing. Well this is almost impossible since the world has so many places and different wordings for more or less the same thing. I know that the US have states and not provinces, but the engine driving the database does not know it. And if I teach that engine, somebody else might come along and tell me that in xyz the provinces are called "hugedubi", so will have to find a way to seperate this as well. Combined with all the possibilities one can make in the selection process inside this engine, that would be a very lot of work. I would estimate at least 7 hours. Do you see what I mean? It's the relation of time invested to benefit.
Best regards,
Andy

I do really hope your point about time : benefits is taken. Personally, I found the estimate of an actual time helpful to emphasise the general point and I think if you are able to do this for some of our other suggestions, it might well give fruitful cause for thought.
