Istanbul - Turkey, Istanbul The ancient Romans were obsessed with water. In Istanbul, over 100 were built. After the revolt of 582, Emperor Justinian commissioned the building of this massive 105000 sq ft water preservation area with a capacity of 2.8 million gallons. The Ottomans preferred running water rather than still and the cistern fell into disrepair. For centuries, however, residents knew the could get water, and the occasional fish, by dropping a bucket through a hole in their floor.
The cistern was not "discovered" until the 19th C by a German archaeology team and initial restorations began in 1985. The cistern is not suitable for bus tours and often excluded from private tours, a more peaceable attraction in a crowded city.
