Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark after Copenhagen, but is is a small city, of real human size. I was there in 1999-2000, so things might have changed... Anyway, Denmark is the paradise for bikes and nature, and Aarhus is a good illustration of it.

Favourite spots: |
Since I'm crazy about cinema, I always look for Art & Essay ones, and Aarhus has got one : Ost for Paradis (Sorry, I don't have striped(?) O). There's also a bar in the place, so you don't have to wait outside until the movie start. There's a huge garden next to the School of Business, and when you go down, you arrive in the Old City, with Den Gammle By (The Old City...), where you have a gathering of old houses, that are animated in the summer.

What's really great: |
When I was there, it was a nice little place where people are mostly very well-educated, trendy and friendly. And helpful ! I remember once, I was in the street with my bike, desperately trying to find my way (I always take 10 minutes to read a map and get where I have to go). A Dane came to me and started to talk to me in Danish. I answered in English that I couldn't speak dane, so he proposed me - in English- to show me the direction I was looking for. I haden't ask him, it was a spontaneous proposal for help... I've always been amazed by the kindness of the people, and I don't really agree with those who say Scandinavian people are cold. At least, Danes are not! Many other experiences comforted this first impression. Aarhus was also my first long experience abroad, and it really made me feel like travelling more and more. So I guess there must be something in there....

Hangouts: |
You can easily find nice pubs with small candles, tables and chairs with the famous Danish design. I only regret that it's a bit expensive, but most of the times, the place is perfectly clean (at least in the beginning of the evening)

Other recommendations: |
Danes are very serious people... during the week! But at the end of it, especially among young people, there is a strong tradition to get reasonnably dead drunk.
