Annecy is the capital of the french departement Haute Savoie and lies on beautiful Lac d'Annecy. The town has 51.000 inhabitants and has a long history. It is also called Venice of the Alps because it has various canals, lots of bridges and river cafés.
|
The setting of Annecy is spectacular. It lies on the end of lake Annecy a 27 square kilometer big mountain lake. It's waters flow through various canals through the old town of Annecy before the will eventually go into the Rhone river and descending into the Mediterranean. Once you worked out the arduous traffic situation you will beginn to like the charme of the city. Finding a certain place is quite hard to undertake, because there are big pedestrian areas and loads of one way streets. I went there on my motorbike an had troubles with overheating in the evening rush hour ;-) Eventually I found the hotel I planned to stay. And once the motorcycle safely stored away I could beging to relax and calm down. The large Pedestrian areas have all sorts of various shops. So for all you shopaholics plenty of things to explore. If you are more into ancient sights, Annecy has a Castle on a small hill in the town and various old churches and even a cathredal. In the very old town you can find ambulatorys which will help you window shop even in rainy weather. Near the lake you have a large green and several parks where you can hang out, relax, go jogging, rollerblading, strolling... there are all sorts of boats for hire and you can mix with locals enyojing a round of boule.

Favourite spots: |
I liked the old town with the canals very much. You can walk up and down, sit down in a river cafe have a ricard draw in the scene and scenery. Get the feel of the town and enjoy the pure luxury of having nothing else to do and worry about than finishnig your cup before you get a new one. Walking up to the castle gives great views over the town. You have diverse ways going up and down all sporting their own charm. If you are into cheeses and all sorts of antiquites go explore the various shops. There are also great boulangeries and confisseries.

What's really great: |
The scenery with the canals all over the old town was unique. I really reminds you of Venice. But the big difference that you always see the mountains behind. Water is flowing quite strongly opposed to the still waters of venice canals. There are no such big bridges like in venice and you would get in trouble looking for a gondola. Still it has a unique charme and a special feeling.

Accommodations: |
I stayed at the Hotel du Nord a small two star hotel near the pedestrian area. It's in the old part of the town.
There are all sorts of accomodation available from B&B's to 4* hotels. You should be able to find your perfect stay.
Next to the Castle there is a small B&B which looked nice from the outside. I think the next time I'll go there and check it out.

|
Restaurants: |
Annecy boasts a hughe load of all sorts of restaurants. There are many along the canals with riverside cafes. I ate a good place called the lyonnais. Because we celebrated the birthday of my girlfriend.
You can find everything from very basic meals up to Michelin praised star restaurants.
