Bakhchisaray is a small town located in the heart of Crimean peninsula and used to be the capital of the Crimean Khanate. Not only the town is interesting but you can find a lot of beautiful places around.
|
The town is small but offers several sights. Also its vicinity is full of interesting places including cave towns, beautiful platoes, endless forests and sunny beaches. All within an hour-long ride on a bus or car or within a walking distance. Around the town you may want to use marshrutka (a mini-bus) - 1 grivna for a ride. To get to the town use elektrichka, a train that goes on short distances and feel the atmosphere there.

Favourite spots: |
There are many places around and to see at least some of them you need several days. The following list contains only the most beautiful ones I visited and recommend to see:
1. Palace of the Crimean Khans
2. Cave towns (esp. Chufut-Kale)
3. Cave monastery (monks will show you around, admission free, donation appreciated)
4. Go the seashore (eg. to Peschanoe)
5. Sevastopol and adjoining ruins of Chersonesos (an ancient city founded by the Greeks). In the vicinity there is a harbour full of military ships. Sevastopol used to be the main harbour of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet.

What's really great: |
A must-have is the Palace of the Crimean Khans. You can enter the yard free-of-charge but to get inside you pay 20 grivnas (or 10 for students). It's a guided tour and it's better you know Russian at least a bit. The guide is very friendly and gives a handful of interesting information about the palace. The tour is about 40-minute long and you will see the interior thoroughly including the harem, separate chambers for men and women, service rooms and others. It's full of fountains and the most famous is the crying fountain. The guide will tell you the legend about it. Bakhchisaray has its unique atmosphere like the whole Crimea with many cultures existing together. This melting pot makes Crimea a peninsula of varieties.

Sights: |
Go to the Chufut-Kale. On your way you will find an orthodox monastery located in a cave. Don't miss Karaim cemetery. This necropolis is located at the back of Chufut-Kale, but you can't go through the town as the back gate is closed. Take a track around the Chufut-Kale. Going further ahead you will get to the Tepe-Kermen (another cave town, that has fallen into decay). Climb the hill with the same name and enjoy the vistas.

Accommodations: |
There are several hotels in Bakhchisaray but the standard is really soviet (if you know what I mean). A better and cheaper option is to find a room with people living there. Many locals offer rooms to let and the cost varies from ca. 10 to 50 grivnas (low season - May). Always ask if they have hot water because it's not a standard. People there are very friendly (people from Central Asia too - they were moved there in the Soviet times). I lived in Marx Street (ulitsa Marksa) at Tiotia Ola (a very friendly woman from Kirghizia).

|
Restaurants: |
In Crimea you will find several kinds of food that are typical for this region. Thanks to many Uzbeks you can have also Uzbek food (try samsa). In front of the Palace of Khans across the street there is cheburechnaya, i.e. a place where you can get chebureki (kind of dumplings) - I prefer meat filling. A main course and a beer will cost you less than 20 grivnas.

Other recommendations: |
Take a bus ride to the seashore. I was is Peschanoe. The shore is really great and looks impressive, although the beaches were a bit dirty and gravelly. The ride shouldn't take you more than an hour.
