If you're looking for a cozy, not-so-touristy place to go in Mexico, look to Cuernavaca. However, it is a town chock-full of language schools, so there are a lot foreigners, but mainly there for learning culture and language more than just being a tourist.

Favourite spots: |
There are two plazas I really enjoyed...the first is full of people and movement and fun to walk around and see what's going on. The other is a perfect place to just sit and relax. I also liked the nightlife -- it's there if you want it, but not so over-powering if you'd just like to hang out.

What's really great: |
I fell in love with the beauty and tranquility of Cuernavaca. There's really nothing else to describe what made it special to me.
|
|
Sights: |
The old castle is amazing with lots of cool art showing key part of the history of Mexico.

|
Restaurants: |
Most of the restauarants can be found around the plazas....There are great places, from cheap to expensive; from traditional to American Subway and McDonald's

Good report on Cuernavaca. I was a student at a language school and that's what made the trip great for me. If you want to visit a great city that is just an hour from Mexico City then Cuernavaca is it. And if you want to come home with a greater ability or any ability to speak Spanish then you should sign up for one of the language schools. They are inexpensive and you don't need to be a student in high school or college. You can sign up on your own.
Most schools can arrange your accomodations with a local family. They will usually provide you with your own room and one meal a day. Additionally, they will have filters on the faucets so your water is fine to drink. All this costs a lot less than you think. |
