Fairbanks is a small but growing city in the midst of a frontier. Despite the concrete laid, it is very much close to nature. Much of the city looks like some place in a third world country. But most other places remind me of a Summer camp; rustic & easy-going.

Favourite spots: |
Angel Rocks Park, Chena village, the University of Alaska, Farmer's Market at Tanana Valley Fairgrounds. Alaskaland, & Pumphouse Historical Site.

What's really great: |
I took the Discovery Cruise down the Chena River to the village of Chena, which replicates a typical Native Alaskan village. Here real Native Alaskan lecture on how their anscestors lived & how their people still live today. Another super trip was flightseeing. Many owners of small planes are willing to fly you around the area to see the whole place from the air. It can cost anywhere from $25 - $45. You can find their ads at the Visitors' Center.

Sights: |
As mentioned before, the Discovery Cruise & flightseeing can show you a lot of Fairbanks & it's surroundings. Angel Rocks is especially breathtaking when you stand on top of the rocks & look at the hills roll off into the horizon. Behind the University of Alaska are many hiking trails going off into many scenic areas. (Always take plenty of mosquito repellent in the Summer.)

Accommodations: |
There are many inexpensive places to stay. Many Alaskans make extra money on the side by renting out parts of their house to visitors. Many have converted their basement, garage, toolshed, even trailers parked out back into hostels or B&Bs. They are very inexpensive, safe, clean, & comfortable. You can choose from many posted at the Visitors' Center.

Nightlife: |
Also posted at the Vistor's Center.

Hangouts: |
Same as above.

Restaurants: |
Many good places to eat are all around. They are easy to find & inexpensive. You can also see many of their ads posted at the Visitors' Center.

Other recommendations: |
Downtown Fairbanks has many shops where you can find many uniquely Alaskan items to take home. And to the east of Fairbanks is the tiny town of North Pole, which is famous for it's Santa Claus Village & has many beautiful picnic grounds. (Again, don't forget the mosquito repellant. I can't stress this enough.)
