Being by the sea, boating and fishing are prevalent activities.

A small penisula, surrounded by beaches & parks, this place has something for everybody, whether you want to relax or go out for exitement. It is a place where so much of the history & natural beauty is preserved.

What's really great: |

At the Coast Guard Station, you can get very close to the sea lions (but don't touch).
Downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea (where Clint Eastwood use to be the mayor) has so many shops resembling hobbit houses. There are so many art galleries, bookstores, & bakeries with unusually decorated treats. When fog roles over the place you'd swear you're some fantasy novel. Fisherman's Wharf and the Coast Guard jetty are great for sea lion viewing. Just follow the barking of seals. I always visit the Museum of Natural History in Pacific Grove when I'm in town.

Sights: |
Del Monte Beach, the Coast Guard Pier, Cannery Row, Lover's Point, Marine Park Gardens, Asilomar Beach, 17 Mile Drive, Carmel Valley, Point Lobos State Park, & Highway One going south to Big Sur.
Accommodations: |
Many motels line the main strip of Seaside. Monterey & Carmel has several hotels that are somewhat expensive. Pacific Grove has several B&Bs in Victorian manors. Check the internet. Try www.monterey.com/mc4/mc4.html.
Nightlife: |
Cannery Row & Lighthouse Avenue (the main strip) of New Monterey hold several nightclubs.
Hangouts: |
Same as above + Carmel has a few hidden away in its back alleys & hidden lanes.
Restaurants: |
Many inexpensive eateries can be found on Fisherman's Wharf & in downtown Pacific Grove. Outdoor eating can be found at the Barnyard in Carmel Valley & at Nepenthe's, beyond Big Sur. While here, you HAVE TO try the squid (calemare). If you like fried clams, you'll LOVE fried squid. I guarantee it.

Nat,
This is a nice start and you have some lovely pictures. Nothing beats walking along the wharf! Don't forget the Monterey Bay Aquarium which is regarded as one of the finest in the world! |
