Great point to Rwanda and mountain gorillas. A very unstable region anad NOT recommended whatsoever for anyone going to this part of Africa. On the verge of multiple major violent outbreaks.

First question: why are you planning on going to Goma. Great place as far as DRC goes, but very unstable (2007) and not recommended for travelers wishing to see the mountain gorillas (Rwanda is much safer and easily accessible). Highly not recommended to go on the DRC side to see the gorillas as there are guerillas everywhere (yes, a pun). We were shook down several times and were forced to talk our way through multiple check points.

IF you ignore this advice, heading toward Rutshuru to see the gorillas is outstanding. One of the most beautiful hikes I have been on. Took about 1.5 hours to cross the valley to the volcano, up the side (another 2 hours), then you almost walk on top of them. We tipped the guards well. Highly recommend you do the same as the more money they get, the more likely they will stay to protect these creatures. (be conservative at the same time, however)

What's really great: |
Lake Kivu and the drive to Rutshuru...incroyabl-e...

Accommodations: |
Several decent hotels. Recommend any that are directly on Lake Kivu. Names escape me now, but there aren't that many to choose from.

I'm sad that there is still perception that this place is unsafe. When I went, I felt safe. No pictures? |
