Isla Mujeres is an island located off the coast of the Yucatan Penninsula, near the city of Cancun. It is accessible by boat or ferry. Many tourists to Cancun will visit this island on a 'day trip'. Some people will take the time to visit Isla Mujeres for a longer stay. There are several small hotels, as well as private condominiums which can be rented for a short visit. This island has a quaint shopping area (to buy souvenirs), Mayan ruins, an ecological reef, a tourist park, a naval base, and other major areas. However, the most intersting part of the island is Playa Norte, a white sand beach. In my opinion, Playa Norte is the most beautiful beach in all of Mexico.

Favourite spots: |
Playa Norte: beautiful white sand and beach activities El Garrafon: a reef that has been termed as an ecological park. Many visitors come here to snorkel or to dive. Mayan ruins: On the southern point of the island can be found the ruins from the Mayan empire.

What's really great: |
Laying out in the Carribbean sun on Playa Norte, watching the 'girls go by,' swimming the the clear, turquoise water, and sipping a Coco Loco (a special rum drink made at the beach on this island) were my favorite parts of this island paradise. However, I enjoyed the week in the condominium that I rented. There was no phone, no television, and no clock. What a great way to get away from the busy life back home.

Sights: |

Playa Norte: One of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico
Mayan ruins: This can be accessed by renting a golf cart and driving around the island.

Nautibech Condominiums: These apartments can be rented by the day or by the week when the owner is not using them.

We were in Isal Mujeres in 1982... Wonder if much has changed. Great report. I just got back from an vacation to Italy and posted reports on Capri, Sorrento, Positano, Pempeii, and Lake Como. Have a look and let me know what you think.

Hi Russ,
Isla is one of my all time favourite destinations as well. It is really hard to put the magic that it has into words. Playa Norte I dream about still...
Happy travels,
Kerrie |
