Nara travelogue picture
Nara is a great 40 min. train ride from Kyoto. This is a must whether you are in the area or not. Make the journey! Kyoto and Nara are as Japan as you can get. There are temples galore, animals, matsuri's (festivals), candle parks (during the right time of year...fall), gardens, everything you can think of when you think of Japan. If you are lucky, you can see Geisha's in the main area of the park posing for photographs. Many schools have field trips here so it is fun to see the Japanese children standing in awe of the temples as you do the same.

Favourite spots:

Daibutsu. This is the largest wood structure in the world. They include the mass of the yard in this feat of having the largest wood structure, however, it is still very impressive. Inside is the Daibutsu which is a Buddha statue that sits about three stories high. On the back end of the main temple, there is a hole in a beam that says if you can squeeze through it, you are on the path to enlightenment. Just fun little quirks like that all over the area!

What's really great:

The deer. They are everywhere. For about 1 USD (100 yen), you can buy crackers to feed the deer. They will come right up to you and eat out of your hand. The festivals that are put on here are wonderful. Candles floating on water, octopus balls (rolled into balls, not what you were thinking!), people of all ages in kimono's...very pleasant.

Accommodations:

I stayed in Kyoto...not sure about places.

This photo is one of two guards that watch you as you enter to the Daibutsu (Buddha)

Hangouts:
There are several places to grab an Extra super ultra dry Asahi...(they like their dry beer!)
