Pushkar is a great desert resort to rest up in India. It has a many nice hotels with swimming pools and a uniquely Indian holy city atmosphere. It is also famous for its yearly camel festival and camel safaris.

Pushkar is a holy city devoted to Hindu God Brahma. It is a small tourist town surrounding a small lake which the Hindus consider Holy and come to bathe in. Pushkar is only a short bus ride from the city Ajmer, but seems a world away with only small roads with limited traffic and surrounded by desert. It is a great place to walk around watching the street vendors selling trinkets, langur monkeys running from roof to roof, and cows peacefully eating trash along the side of the road.

Favourite spots:




	the Holy Lake

My favorite spot has to be by the lake watching the religious piously bathing and the children splashing and laughing in the waters. Temples surround the lake and concrete steps lead down into it. It kind of looks like a small Varanasi. The lake is also alive with large fish. The only drawback is that there are many touts who harass tourists around the lake and try to sell flowers to throw into lake.

What's really great:

Pushkar is a great place to take camel or horse safaris out into the surrounding desert. There are many travel agents offering single day or multi day trips. There is also a camel fair, I think in November, but I was not there at that time of the year.

Accommodations:

I stayed in beautiful large room at the Pushkar Villas which had an attractive swimming pool and large cable tv for $7 a night at the weekly rate in the low season. There are many other nice hotels with swimming pools in Pushkar, including the Peacock Hotel which is run by the same people.

Nightlife:

No alcohol is allowed in Pushkar. To drink or party you must take 15 minute local bus or taxi ride to Ajmer.

Pushkar is holy city which allows no meat or eggs to be eaten here. There are many restuarants which serve delicious vegetarian (I do not normally eat vegetarian.) breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. There are also many street vendors serving vegetarian food like nans. The breakfast buffet tends to cost $1, and lunch or dinner $1.50. I was in Pushkar during May of 2004.
