Oct 25, 2021 08:00 PM Sozopol - ancient Apollonia

Sozopol - ancient Apollonia Clouds in Burgas in the morning but no rain. It is always nice to meet the countryman while you are on the trail. Imagine that yesterday in the evening I met Mr Pawel from South Poland - he was recently travelling 7 months across South East Asia going as far as New Zealand! We had an interesting discussion about travelling and different corners of the globe. He used info from my website preparing his journeys. Small world!
Today I went by bus to Sozopol - another ancient colony established by Greeks 600 years before the Chiston the coast of the Black Sea. Again the colony of Apollonia was build on the peninsula. It is cozy but doesn't look like Nesebyr. Bizantine churches are very small and poor in comparison to those in Nesebyr. Instead you will find here more traditional Bulgarian stone & timber houses. In the season the place is crowded but today there were only 6 tourists or so...
The bus from Burgas to Sozopol operates every half an hour and costs 5 leva. Tonight I plan to catch tye night bus to Istanbul.

Oct 24, 2021 08:00 PM Local bus to Nesebar

Local bus to Nesebar The South Bus station in Burgas is just near the railway station. There are conductors on the buses, so there is no need to buy the ticket in advance. I am going to Nesebar, It took me 50 minutes on the bumpy asphalt and ticket for 7 leva (they pay 1,94 leva for 1 euro). Bus no. 22 will drop you in the New Nesebar - some 2 kms from the old city. Today's Nesebar was founded on the little peninsula some 500 years before the Christ. It was Greek colony of Mesembria. Then the area was ruled by Bizantium. Many little churches was built here during this period. Some of them survived and you can see them now. They represent special "red brick & white stone" style. There are also typical Bulgarian houses in the narrow streets - first floor is made of stone and second of timber. All together forms unique and picturesque place registered on the UNESCO World Heritage list. I was here some 50 years ago - at the time of black & white photography. Now Nesebar looks better, has less ruins and more color. In the tourist season there are crowds of the people in the narrow streets, but today I was almost alone... Great, sunny day but too much wind from the Black Sea!

Oct 23, 2021 08:00 PM Low-cost to Burgas...

Low-cost to Burgas... You know this airline for sure! When we departed from Gdansk at 6.20 pm it was already dark around. For the first time I used an extra service offered by Ryan: transfer airport - city because I expected to land around 10 pm - public transport could be rare at this time. It doesn't cost much in Burgas, because the airport is only some 10 kms from the city center...
There were only 30 passengers on the plane (end of the season!) so we had plenty of space...
We had also unexpected event on board: young man was smoking in the toilet. They discovered that and after landing nobody was allowed to disembark until the police arrived and took this stupid guy...
Burgas airport is small but well organized, first they checked the
covid vaccinations or tests. Then my passport and face was scanned in the automatic gate and I was free... Out of the terminal soon appeared the driver with my name on the screen of the tablet. OK! He took me to my "apartment" in the city. Nice guy on the street made a phone call to get a code for the key box. Yes, my apartment (13 euro per night) is just the flat in the communist-era block. I do not care... Good night from Bulgaria!

Oct 22, 2021 08:00 PM New journey to the south!

New journey to the south! It is hard to resist the temptation seeing the offer of a 2.5-hour flight to the south for only 50 zlotys! So I'm flying directly from Gda?sk to Burgas, Bulgaria, with the intention of continuing my trip by bus to Istanbul.
I was in this exotic city in 1973 - in the time of black and white photography! It will be not only an escape from the autumn gray season in Poland, but also a journey of memories - the eighth journey in 2021. Daily "hot" news written in English about where I am and what happened, as always, you will find in my travel log. Please keep your fingers crossed!

Oct 16, 2021 08:00 PM Foggy morning in Ljubliana

Foggy morning in Ljubliana It was foggy and cold morning in Ljubliana. I like this cozy city, so I took a walk to the Ljublianica River where is the old town. Streets were empty. No wind. Calm. Right moment to say goodbye to the capital of friendly Slovenia. It was clearing up when I arrived later with my pack to the railway station. Arriva bus to the airport was waiting and I was surprised: the driver said that they have promotion today and gave me a ticket just for one euro (before I paid 4,10). OK! Area around the station looks like the new Ljubliana downtown with few skyscrapers and wide streets (see picture) When we reached Brnik airport ( it was like 50 minutes ride) the sun was already shining and I enjoyed the view of the mountains on the horizon. The LOT plane to Warsaw is already on the runway, It seems tha wae will depart on time... One more interesting and relaxing voyage is coming to the happy end :)

Oct 15, 2021 08:00 PM Sunny Trieste

Sunny Trieste This is the last day of our cruise. At 9 am we were docking just near Stazione Marittima in Trieste. I took nice pictures of the coastal promenade from the deck 11. After light breakfast, saying goodbye to the friends and crew I passed the gangway. Before afternoon bus to Ljubliana I had enough time to walk around the central part of Trieste.
Trieste is picturesque place, open to the sea. The heart of the city is Canale Grande. Important Piazza Unita is located just nearby. This Canale Grande is much shorter than the one in Venice and not used for transport. On bothe sides there are ornate palaces and open air cafes on the sidewalks, where the people enjoy the sun and chat. Piazza Unita is wide and monumental, surrounded by the banks, museums and government buildings. San Antonio classical church stands at the end of the channel, bus surprisely on the right bank you will see Serb orthodox church, even bigger than San Antonio... Houses in the central Trieste are high and often have rich decorations on the facades. In front of the station there is little park with the monument of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (famous Sissi). Homeless people sleep around in sleeping bags
Left - luggage room in the station building is closed, so my wandering with the luggage around the city was limited. I hope that my Flixbus to Ljubliana will be on time. :)

Oct 14, 2021 08:00 PM It is blowing in Bari...

It is blowing in Bari... The sea was rough in the night. In the morning we found ourselves in Bari port. It is cloudy here, but no rain. Instead we experience strong wind - it is not a pleasure to stay on the open deck. We are docking near the ferry terminal - just 200 m from the old city of Bari - the church of St Nicolas is visible. It is a shame that Costa company do not allow us to go to the town on our own. I did not buy the excursion because I have been in Bari just a year ago. In the evening I will attend the last show in the ship's elegant theatre. Practically it is the last day of our cruise. Tomorrow I will disembark in Trieste...

Oct 13, 2021 08:00 PM Bad luck - Corfu in the rain...

Bad luck - Corfu in the rain... It was cloudy and dark in the morning when we docked in the capital of Corfu Island. Bad luck! From the deck 11 I took a picture of the great panorama of the old and new town with two castles overlooking the red roofs of the ex-venetian town. In the early afternoon we went by bus for the excursion - first to the destillery to try traditional local drinks - liquores. They sell it for 17 euro/bottle. The rain in theeantime became stronger. And half an hour later when we were continuing our drive south, passing some ruins the wet poloce offiser informed us that the road onward to the Sissi palace is blocked due to the heavy rain water on the road! Bad luck! We turned back to the Cannon view point overlooking the airport, the sea and Mouse Island. This must be nice place with cafes around, but not in the heavy rain and wind!
In the Corfu old city there are two Venetian fortresses - entrance to the older one you see on the picture (6 euro entry fee). We took the walk through the main square - the biggest in Greece to the church of San Spiridion - the saint patron of Corfu. Streets around are very nice withany cafes and souvenir shops. Let's be optimistic!

Oct 12, 2021 08:00 PM The highlights of Kefallonia

The highlights of Kefallonia It was sunny morning when our ship reached Kefallonia - the biggest of the Ionian Islands. Little known but picturesque Kefallonia has at least two highlights to offer to the foreigner. I saw th in the afternoon. The first one is Lake Melisani. Imagine crystal clear lake in the cave 24 m high. Partly open and 160 m long. They charge 6 euro for the 10 min ride on the little paddle boat into the cave. Nice experience - something new!
The second highlight is a rde by mountain road along the west coast with the great view of the Myrtos Beach some 150 m down. The color of the sea water in this bay is incredible turquoise- similar to Wreck Bay on Zakhyntos Is. Great day!

Oct 11, 2021 08:00 PM Beautiful Mykonos Island

Beautiful Mykonos Island I remember Mykonos from the 70-ties. In my opinion it was always one of the nicest Greek's island... Today at the sunrise time I was already on the upper deck. The ship was docking in the new port on the other side of the bay. It is also spectacular location: On the hills around whitewashed houses, blue sea.... Welcome back to the beautiful Mykonos! I am booked for the afternoon tour around the island - to see more than on my first visit, when I was walking around by foot only...
