Aug 06, 2021 08:00 PM Wigry Travellers Festival

Wigry Travellers Festival Invited by the local entrepreneur Mr Arek I was driving today more then 300 kms east - mostly along the Russian border to give my presentation. The roads are not too bed but windy and almost empty. . I had a chance to enjoy lake and forestal landscapes.
The festival is hosted by Wigry Lake Museum located in Wigry National Park, just on the bank of the lake.
The weather in the evening is sunny. I took the walk along the coast waiting for my presentation slot. Let's hope that the a/c lecture hall will be full! :)

Jul 22, 2021 08:00 PM Sailors and travellers in my dacha...

Sailors and travellers in my dacha... We have lovely, hot and sunny summer in Gdansk this year. Flowers are all around. I am receiving many friends, sailors and travellers, offering them fresh fruits and the travel stories. It is real paradise for me. Yesterday we celebrated 36th anniversary of Wojtkowka! :) See my good friend Ela on the picture...

Jul 17, 2021 08:00 PM "Zejman" Club is open again!

As my friends know there in the old town of Gdansk there is Sailors and Travellers Club Zejman located in the old city gate (Brama Nizinna). The club was closed a long time because the COVID pandemia. But today I can announce that it is open again. I was attending the concert of the NEMO band. See me on the picture with the leader of NEMO, my friend Jacek Miaskowski. We had a good time this evening listening to the shanties and talking with the old friends. Welcome to Zejman!

Jul 05, 2021 08:00 PM Strawberries and fresh vegies...

Strawberries and fresh vegies... I have relaxing but also busy time in my flourishing Wojtkówka. Ripe stawberries are waiting for the pick-up. Big califlowers are ready to eat. Will I manage to eat alone the one from the picture for the today's obiad (late lunch in Poland)?? But it is so fresh and so tasty with the butter! :)
Good message from Norway arrived: my long-waited son Adam with two grandsons will be here on Sunday. I was talking this morning with my sweet cherry tree - it promised that the delicious fruits will be ready for the pick just on Sunday! :) I know that Adam likes them and his boys too!

Jul 02, 2021 08:00 PM From Odessa to Gdansk...

From Odessa to Gdansk... In the morning we still had enough time to take a walk around central Odessa and visit the biggest sobor in the city - Spaso-Preobrazhensky sobor. Fortunately it was open and we had a chance to enjoy beutiful paintings on the walls.
Later on we passed throuh Gorodskoy Sad - little and cozy city park with many fountains and sculptures.
In the afternoon we travelled to the airport with our luggage. Unfortunately the information about minibus (marshrutka) no. 129 operating from railway station to the airport was false (that's Ukraine!) We were waiting more than an hour and finally took expensive taxi (270 hryvnia) to reach the terminal. Soon I was flying on the Ryanair direct flight to Gda?sk... In the evening I enjoyed my sweet strowberries in Wojtkówka. :)
One more interesting trip was completed, now it is the time to enjoy my flowers and fresh vegies!

Jul 01, 2021 08:00 PM The fortress in Bilhorod.

The fortress in Bilhorod. It is probably second big and well- preserved fortress in Ukraine. It was built from 13th century on. It is located on the high bank in the mouth of the Dniestr River. Less then 100 kms south of Odessa but the junk "elektrichka" departing 4 times per day from Odessa station needs 2,5 hours to get there. The ticket is dirty cheap - 30 UAH = less than 1 euro each way. On the way amateur artists are performing in the carriages... Old ladies are selling the icecream.... You will have a fun! Once in Bilhororod Dnestrovsky cross the park and go all over the way Mikolayevska street - some 2,5 kms. You will see walls and towers from the distance... Entry fee they charge is 80 UAH no discounts. But it is worth the price! there are 3 chains of the walls. In the lower yard the craftsmen are working...
In the evening at sunset I attended the Dunayevski operetta in the open air theatre on the passenger pier of Odessa Port. Still interesting, but the temperature after spectacular sunset felt down , so do not forget to bring warm cloth with you :) Return to the quarter through the vibrant streets was nice. And the bottle of wine (2 USD) at the end of the another interesting day...

Jun 30, 2021 08:00 PM Catacombs of Odessa and the unforgettable evening in opera

Catacombs of Odessa and the unforgettable evening in opera In the morning we visited big Privoz Bazaar - vibrant market near the Odessa Railway Station. Interesting place but watch your pockets! From this area marshrutka 90 (12 hr) took us to the Odessa Catacombs out of the city. The terminology is confusing because what you see are not a catacombs like in Rome, nobody was burried there, but therere were sandstone quarries. During the WW2 Russian partisans had their quarters there. You can visit some 500 m of the underground trail with the local guide (200 UAH per group plus ticket 50 pp).
But the highlite of the day was the evening in the Odessa Opera House. The performance of the "Swan Lake" was on the world's level and the atmosphere in the 19th century ornata theatre made this spectacle unforgettable! I think I will be back here someday!

Jun 29, 2021 08:00 PM Odessa, ah Odessa...

Odessa, ah Odessa... Nobody speaks Ukrainian on the streets, nobody wears the mask. Odessa has still his charm with many expats living here and the life is vibrant in the shaddy streets of the old town.
We took the walk to the monument of Russian empress Catherine the Second who erected the city at the end of 18th century. then, passing elegant Hotel de Paris we reached the monumrnt of Richelieu - one of the westernes invited to develop Odessa (Russia at this time didn't have many engineers). Richulieu looks down to the famous from the early moovie Potiomkin stairs. And on the other end of the stairs there is marine terminal and you can buy for just 100 hrywnia (3 euro) ticket for the boat excursion along the port and the beaches. It lasts 45 minutes with Russian comment. Worth to make! It was hot day. We found the buffet per kilo restaurant on Katerinska - you pay here 27 hrywnia - 1 dollar per each 100 g of the chosen food on your plate. Bon apettite!

Jun 28, 2021 08:00 PM Landing in Odessa

Landing in Odessa At the boarding time in Gdansk airport they checked our covid certificates. Then there was almost 2- hours flight to Odessa on the Black Sea. I was impressed by the brand new airport terminal. The immigration checked our covid insurance. Yes, they built the nice terminal, but there is no public transport to the city except taxis for 250 hrywnia. Uuu... There is info on internrt that marshrutka 117 goes to Katerinska St. but they do not operate now, You have to walk almost 1 km to the stop of 168 - it will take you to Sadovaya an then walk again about 1 km.
OK, I found our apartment in the quiet courtyard.
A lot of walking people in the central streets. We took a walk to the port area where they placed the monument of the soldiers from Battleship Patiomkin - see picture.. Evening is hot, Odessa is vibrant and easy going.

Jun 27, 2021 08:00 PM Short escape - not only to the opera...

Short escape - not only to the opera... It's full summer so I can't leave my Wojtkówka for long. But a trip for a few days is quite real. When I visited Odessa in 2003, the famous opera house was being renovated. Today it is reopened and for me - a lover of opera and ballet - the opportunity to see not only its magnificent interiors, but also to see the ballet "Swan Lake" has opened. I fly directly from Gda?sk to Odessa on a cheap airline, I rent a cheap apartment near the opera house, which will be not only a base for visiting the theater, but also for trips - including the one to the Akerman fortress, built centuries ago at the mouth of the Dniester. There will also be an opportunity to visit the catacombs and other places that I did not see during my first visit... Friendly cat Elegant with my friends will take care of Wojtkówka -
