I have realized, that if members have 3 and more pages of uploaded images, many of them has been not rated at all for weeks, and may Not be rated at all! For example, I had my images uploaded about a week ago, and many of them have not been rated yet.

Is there is any better system for rating images?

Hi Boris

I agree with you that if you upload pictures you want people to watch, rate, get some useful information or simly enjoy them.

So the question is how can our picture gallery be more interesting for the GLOBO's to look at and browse.

There are some thoughts of mine:

You need good quality! With good quality you get higher ratings and the gallery looks more interesting. If you see a photographers gallery wich has only 5* pictures on the first page :-) you most probably want to crawl further and enjoy his pics. On the other hand if the ratings go down to 2* on the first page you simply assume that the other pictures are not worth checking out.

Please feel free to browse the fourm about picture quality.

Another thing I think is important, is quantity of posted pictures (merely for premium members). If you post like 20 Pictures in one day people don't go to the lenght to rate every picture it's just too much work. You have to consider if somebody logs into GLOBOsapiens every other day he has a huge amount of new content to browse through (not just uploaded by you but also by other GLOBO's)! If he doesen't checks out every thing right away by the next time he logs in, the pictures are no more new and don't show up anymore and are hidden well down in the picture database. Thats how they got lost.

You need good names for you pictures. The more special a picture subject is the better the name has to be, remember the only thing that shows up under new pictures is the name Country and City where the picture was taken and your name. You have to get the interest of your fellow members.

Look at these examples to explain:

http://www.globosapiens.net/andreas/picture-where-the-hell-did-this-guy-buy-his-postcard-13.html

would you look at the picture if the name said something like: Mountain lake

http://www.globosapiens.net/undedd/picture-come-on-in-the-waters-warm-144.html

would you look at the picture if the name said something like: Boat at the beach

Moreover if your name gets connected with good pictures other members will remember and think that any new picture uploaded by you will be worth checking out. (You sure have some names of members that come to your mind that did post some very nice pictures you extremely liked!)

You can write a nice report about the place you visited and point out that there are more pictures to look at in your personal gallery.

Well there also is the question I posed in the suggestions forum:

http://www.globosapiens.net/topic-picture-search_29_1077_0000.html

Try to make some friens here on GLOBOsapiens be nice and write encouraging comments on their work, they most surely will look at yours too and vote on yours. Interact with other mebers just to get you on their minds, like you did with your post here...;-) (Please don't overrate reports and pictures if they are crap; don't exagerate your flattering. Because it doesn't help the community)

Hope this helps you

Martin

Dear Martin thank you for your prompt reply on all my questions and pointed out to the mistakes I personally have such as

Uploading to many images, and also naming this images with appealing names, so

I would attract more members to see and rate them, AND OFCOARSE –QUALITY!

Secondary you proposal for searching images by countries is a very great idea.

It also can be done by regions in this countries-especially for large counties such as Russia, China, Canada, and USA.

And also adding a function that does go back a few days, so members can see images, read reports and forums, not only that has been posted today.

Best regards, to you

Boris

Hi GLOBO's

Some more thoughts about picture rating.

I just had the premium promotion...

Now found out that I did some photographers some wrong by rating their pictures to low (about a point)!

Did anybody else, that joined and went through all the different levels before going premium later on, find this too?

What about the old timers like spaceout, kathmandukitten or marianne?

I know this site is not really about who got the prettiest pics. But a good rating encourages always to post some more.

I just think that my rating was not really fair before to everybody, that's what bothers me.

Hi mortimer, picasso,

thats an interesting point. I never thought of that you do not make it through all pictures during one login. I will put that on a todo list.

Mortimer, what do you mean by you would have rated them higher. Is this because the qulity was worse? Thats interesting, too. So you have rated pictures one star lower because of the bad compression qulity. Now that you see 100% quality you would have rated them higher? Interesting. No clue how to solve that, but this is definatelly an issue.

Regards,

Andy

Hi Andy

I tried to find a good example. Try to look at this picture for instance:

http://www.globosapiens.net/xzorky/picture-my-backyard-12900.html

in different sizes

It my opinion in size S it doesn't have that much power as in size L the black is a little to dominant in the small size the bright center is way too small to oughtweigh it, whereas in the big size the picture seems more balanced to me.

Some other things I just noticed:

I last logged in some 12 hours ago this morning I got 50 new pictures.... Beginning of the month everybody has new possibilities to post...

I did put up some elephant pictures. Rudi, Brit and Farizan gave me a lot of praise on them in my guestbook but only one person did rate every picture... perhaps even not them. Anyway I think if you make a slide show people follow the link to the slides and don't go to the gallery afterwards to vote on each pictrue they just have seen in the show.

Would it be interesting to have a possibility to vote on the pictures whitin the slide show?

Hi mortimer,

I see this is a matter of compression. To save bandwidth costs and to encourage new members the levels are in operation at globo. So a new member who does not contribute to globo does not create that much costs since the pictures are with a huge compression. Rating of the pictures might be a downside of this system.

Rating pictures inside an album? Puh...that sounds complicated. There must be another solution to solve this.

Hi Andy

This post could be in several other Topics...

Member Activity, Keeping Members posting, Quality Improvement, ....

About picture size and rating, just this point I tried to suggest with member activity, it could be something to be earned.

Let me say that for voting on pictures you need to have contributed at least 20 pictures which means two months worh of pictures before they are allwed to vote. We could make it even harder and say at least one picture has to have a higher vote than 4 on average.

For voting on reports you should have at least 3 reports up. And even harder; one report up that has been given a full ***** rating by two members.

The harder part should at least be aplied for premium members because they easily reach 20 pics...

By the time you have all this rewards you are at least on the biggest non paying size.

This would mean that only when you produce yourself good quality stuff you are qualifing for rating others stuff....

Perhaps I'm just a little bit overexited to invent such rules... ;-)

I agree with Martin's original ideas about the qualities for rating photographs. However, I would like to add some clarification about some of the photos that I have recently seen.

1. The photos need to be of a type that draws the interest of other Globo members. Photographs that fail to capture one's interest often remain unrated, or are rated very low by many members.

2. Quality, quality, quality!! Pictures of subjects that would normally receive a high rating (4 or 5 stars) are often submitted with distortions (out of focus), have shadows that cover the more remarkable aspects of the photo, are submitted diagnally/upside-down/sideways (this is difficult to determine), or have contrast problems and appear so dark as to make them indistinguishable.

3. Some photos are redundant, being copies of other photos or the fourth or fifth submission of the same scene by the same person. While one or two photographs of a scene from one's window might be attractive, four submissions of the same photo at different resolutions gets to be monotonous.

4. Title! As Martin suggested, an appropriate title is often an attention-getter. However, when it is difficult to distinguish the aim of the title from the photo, it is difficult to give the photo a high rating. One such recent picture was entitled "Cat on a Porch," or some such thing. When viewed, one could not see the cat. So, what was the purpose of posting the picture?

5. One of the disqualifications for a photograph when I first became a member was "too personal." Photos were deleted and a message was sent when members posted photographs that were more of a personal nature than of a travel nature. Recent photographs of "Me at the Beach" and "My Father" and other such photos causes some of us to be reluctant when giving high ratings to other photos with people in them. Like many other things in the world, too many incorrect submissiona can be a detriment to the one or two positive images.

6. Sunrise/sunset. It seems as though too many people try to outdo each other on this subject area. The majority of the S/S photos tend to show little, other than a distorted image of the Sun or the clouds. Those wanting high ratings need to look at those submitted by Liz (Whereisliz). Her photographs are usually of a very high quality.

I am certain that I will have more thoughts on this matter, but I need to return to my class right now. It is lab time.
