hii martin ,

well again a interesting topic initiated by you ,i agree with you that rating of pictures are somtimes not upto the mark what it should be and also it depends upon how many people are there online.

but i want to add one thing here ,that is its not only the online people who are having major share in rating a picture ,

when some one log on to this site after a long time ,eh /she used to get all the details of new pictures and reports or what ever on the very home page and thus become easy to check which is latest pictures.

for example: on 18th oct when i log on to globo i saw new pictures of nepal from you and thus i checked and rated it .

by the way you are a keen observer and its pleasure to be a part in ur topic.

Hi GLOBO's

I would like to illustrate some points about the suggested "picture talk" forum:

Yesterday Gloriajames uploaded a picture that was good but not special, it lacked something in my humble opinion.

We happened to meet in the Chat and talked about it...

She asked if I could show her what I mean and sent me the picture. I did some changes to it and sent it back to her. Gloria found that the picture did improve by the alternations I did to it and she deleted the original and uploaded the edited...

Just for you to look at the two pics:

The original picture she mailed me:

The edited version:

http://www.globosapiens.net/gloriajames/picture-lone-gondolier-13677.html

Oh shit.... the original picture got voted on right now and got 5 stars and the edited one only got 4 stars....

It seems that not all people agree with my suggested improvements... ;-)

This could be another interesting part, having a suggestion uploading it and discussing the changes... perhaps somebody has a better Idea than yourself

Thats something that could be done in this special forum thread about picture talk / picture editin / photgraphic skill... whatever you like it to call.

A person can upload a picture and other members could suggest improvements. There could be discussions about these...

Some pictures can't be improved because they are shaky or information is missing or heads are cut off the scan quality is too bad.... For those pictures we could make suggestions what we would have done do make it look better in the first hand.

What do you think about the idea of such a forum thread?

Martin,

I think your suggestion is an improvement. You cropped it and made its colours brighter and lighter. Maybe we can have guidelines: how to improve picture quality.

Do you know a lot about Photoshop and how to improve pictures etc. Because i have some questions but at this moment not enough time to ask them. i'll be back later.

It is a perfect idea to have a: Photo Workshop in which we give feedback to each other's pictures. Only accesible for members who have a certain amount of points.

We'll have to ask Andy to give us a special "Picture Room", where we can do this.

Hi Ravi

The optimized color and brightness, which of course somebody more skilled than I, could have done better are just the latest touch for this picture, IMHO.

What I didn't like in the first hand was that the Buildings werent level (horizontally) and the gondolier was way to small... Therefore I rotated the picture a little bit and cut the unimportant part of the picture away....

I agree that we shouldn't touch too much at our pictures they should always show how it really was, sometimes it's not as nice as you would have liked to show...

On the other Hand when you shoot a picutre you always take a special part out of the scenery. It's you that create it.

That's what I call the photographers eye, constructing the picture, deciding what I would like to see in my picture and deciding what I want to leave out.

Getting down on my knees, retrating some meters or going closer to an object is all part of this picture construction process.

After looking at some private and professional websites I feel we (also me) rate too high at GLOBO. The rating criteria for a five star rating system should run exponentially (curved) rather than linear, some what like the Richter Scale for earthquakes or the point system at Formular-1 motoracing, sorry, only examples I could think of momentarily, but the higher the rating, the more criteria a picture must fullfill - not all of them, but most of them. My system:

[zero stars] - dont rate non-travel or indecent pictures at all!

* relevant to travel and/or the community, nice

** the mediocre pic, good title and description or technically ok

*** technically good, focused, colour, contrast, interesting

**** technically brilliant, good composition, lighting, shadows, colourful

***** exellent first impression, unique situation or place, scratch and dust free, picture tells a story, something unusual about the picture...

Example: See http://www.globosapiens.net/katerinka/pictures-next-one-13761.html Three ratings averaged only ** and yet I like the picture so much, technically brilliant. A poor title should not degraid the picture, Stonehenge in the description saved it. Negative for me are the mowed lawn, not the tiny people on the left, too small to realy desturb the picture. It deserved a **** rating and is now ***, or have I missed something? I have seen this picture before, perhaps it was enhanced and uploaded again - therefore looses its uniqueness, like happened to others recently???

Rudi,

I would normally agree with most that you stated about the stonehenge picture. The negative for me was that it came out too dark on my screen. When I first viewed the picture, it was dark and I could not see anything. I changed computers, and the phot was somewhat better. Then, I looked at it a thired time from another computer. It was still so dark that I could see nothing but a vague outline of the structures. For that reason, I marked the picture as **. This morning, for the first time, I can see the people that you mentioned. The first three times that I viewed the photo it appeared to be a shot taken at 6:00 in the evening, after the sun was down.

Russ

Theres no problem with the picture being to dark whatsoever on my screen... I really think you should look into the settings of your screen graphic controller.... I noticed you did complain about to dark pictures before...

Hi Oldies...

Just recently there was some talk about picture quality and ratings in the travel photography forum.

This is a subject that comes up to surface from time to time, if you search the fora we have quite a few of these topics posted over the last few years...

Lately I must agree with Rangutan that posted in this thread that we vote to high. These bonus points (we talked about in picture rating) for originality are perhaps applied quite leisurely...

And I'm sorry to repeat myself, sometimes I just dont understand how high some pictures are rated...

I just noticed some of russ' work:

http://www.globosapiens.net/bear495/picture-the-chevy-cathedral-20270.html

http://www.globosapiens.net/bear495/picture-plazuelas---city-entrance-20929.html

there sure is quite a lot not good with these pictures... composition, dullness, exposition, shakiness.... I don't understand how these picts got those stars...

and I don't understand why russ who has such high quality standards posted in this thread and such clear views posts so low level pictures... anyway...

I'd like to repeat my point about people should only be allowed to vote after having produced high quality stuff themselfes, after having proven that they too understand what quality is asked for (ie 20 pics with at least 1 with 5 stars)... I'm also thinking about a certain other thing that could be prevented by this... Let's suggest that one of us is a very competitive member and would like to have his pictures on the first site of the general list or would like to have more 5 star pics... He could invite friends to join the site and tell them to vote favourably (only 5 stars) for his pics or even worse make some ghost accounts and vote for them himself... I just can't imagine somebody doing such things, I mean what for! You don't win a damn thing! You won't get some order or something for more 5 star pics... so why could somebody be after that... tststs

the competiton is about pom, rom, mom, ... and this is only staff who will decide and often we see pics as pom that aren't voted high upon before they were pom...

what do you think about this... ?
