Haarlem is famous for its hofjes or almshouses which used to provide subsidized housing for the poor and elderly. The houses were small and built around a courtyard with beautiful flower gardens. Hofjes are entered through a front door that was locked at night. These days many 'hofjes' have been renovated and are very popular places to live. They can all be visited free of charge and are open from 10am – 5 pm
