I was planning an extensive tour of Central & South America, but my mom has just been diagnosed with inoperable stage 3 cancer, so all plans are on hold for the time being. :-(

Looks like my next trip will be to San Diego. Haven't been there for 22 years, I hear it's changed a lot!

The trip to Germany has changed, the kids had a kid and won't be able to go and I think most of my future travel cash will be locked up in visiting, and spoiling, the grand kid!

I will get there, just post poned it a bit!

I just wanted to share with everyone the great news that my mom has responded wonderfully to her cancer treatment, and is feeling better and better these days. So much so, that I am encouraged to start seriously planning that around the world trip I have been dreaming about for years!

Updates to follow!

Liz

My dream destination would be going to either pole; its a dream because I can't se myself acheiving it. I'd also like to go to India - my desire is so great I went out this morning and bought a travel guide, even though I have not intentions of going for the next two years; but where would we be without dreams

After reading Jorge's reports, I would like to go to Reunion and hit the Cook and Easter Islands on the way back! My short term dream is India - still in the planning stages but later this year! And 20 days after I return from India, I am swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco for the first time!!!

Hi all,

Great to see this topic has been revived back from when it was posted by Kathy in 2002. Good news for for Liz and her mum also.

Looking back at the list I see that I have forfilled one of my short term goals of Bali,Lombok and the Gili's, added a few others such as Malaysia, Taipei, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand and am about to forfill my other highly listed dream of visiting Spain later this year.

Thats the dynamics of travelling I guess your dreams are always changing...

Keep the ideas coming they are all inspirations for us all.

Cheers,

Kerrie

Since I made a few years ago my around the world journey, in 80 days (like Phileas Fogg), I dream of making a second around the world journey without flying, taking only famous and historic trains with occasionally boats to cross continents: from Madrid by train to Paris, then to Moscow, Transiberian to Vladivostok, ship to Japan, the Shinkansen to Tokyo, then a ship to San Francisco, then the Union Pacific train to New York, ship to England, and from London the Orient Express train to Paris, and back to Madrid.

I am glad that Liz’s mama is OK and now Liz is finally ready to travel around the world, a journey that will positively overwhelm her life, and that douwundergal is coming to Spain. If you both pass through Madrid on your journeys, please, contact me. I will treat you like Queens!

Mistybleu: about the two poles, you should know that the icebreaker YAMAL sails every summer from Murmansk, in Northern Russia, to Frank Josef Land archipelago, and then to the Magnetic North Pole, round trip 18 days. The cheapest price for a place in a double room, costs about 18.000 US Dollars. For the South Pole, from Punta Arenas and also from the southern island of New Zealand flies regularly an airplane during the austral summer, round trip Punta Arenas - Patriot Hills in the Antarctica continent, and then another flight to the Geographical South Pole, 15 days, costs about 30.000 US Dollars. From New Zealand there is a plane stopping in Mc Murdo US Antarctica base first for a few hours, and then proceeds to the South Pole. Do not lose hopes!
