I was soooo surpised that I enjoyed Warwick so much. It's really a geat place to explore - as well as the surrounding areas.

Report of the Month

Posted: 2007-09-13 03:19 PM
Hi Marianne,

It's a great piece of news for me and I'm really happy with my first RoM. Actually I'm still on my trip (till 19th Sep) but I managed to find some Internet access in Veliko Turnovo.
Warmest regards from Bulgaria then :)

Hi Marianne,

it took some days but now, on Sunday, I find the time to thank you for your congratulations. Well, in NZ you find a lot of great spots and so it is easy to take some good photos.

Thanks again + have a nice sunday!

Fire photos!

Posted: 2007-08-26 01:54 PM
Dear Marianne,
can you imagine that I took these photos of the fire by sitting comfortably at my balcony? The fire was exactly on the opposite of me!
I wish to thank you for your kindness and love for Greece. I hope to meet you here and show you some of the remaining beautiful places of my country!
Greetings once more!

Socrealistic architecture

Marianne, if you are more interested in socrealism, visit Nowa Huta district in Krakow. It rarely becomes a sight on anybody's track, but in this place you can feel the spirit of the Soviet thought. This workers' district was built after WW2 as a counterbalance for Krakow's intelligentsia and was designed as a perfect socialist city. When designed, there was intention not to built any church (which is rather unthinkable in catholic Poland) and one was built not sooner than many years later thanks to Karol Wojtyla (John Paul II) who was then a bishop in Krakow.
You set off soon, so have a great time in Poland.

Cornish extinct! ? Beware.

Posted: 2007-08-03 09:16 AM
Hi Marianne
There is a surprising amount of nationalism in Cornwall and it is common to hear references to 'the English' which are not meant to include the Cornish.
There are a number of Cornish language societies and you may well have cause to bless that bit of water between you and England!! It probably makes it safer for you to say things like that than I should feel.
Cheers

Enjoy Poland!

Posted: 2007-08-03 07:12 AM
Marianne,
I wish you exciting and enjoyable journey to Poland. I'm sure you'll like Krakow and Wroclaw. I think, the way you've chosen is the best, as you will sea beautiful places and still transport is quite good. I was in Dresden ca. 10 years ago but remember that it's an impressive place.
In Poland I recommend using trains operated by PKP Intercity (actually there are two railway operators PKP Intercity and PKP Przewozy Regionalne). Intercity offers bookable (required) seats. In summer trains are often overcrowded so to Wroclaw take EuroCity Wawel (ca. 90 zl one-way) or one of TLK trains (ca. 45 zl) - both 2nd class. 1st class is by half more expensive. TLK trains cost practically the same price as pociag pospieszny (a fast train) but you will have a seat.

All the best,
Adam

Trains

Posted: 2007-08-03 06:42 AM
Hello Marianne,

You can buy tickets in advance (max. 60 days). In Warsaw, Posnan, Szczecin and Wroclaw there are newly opened lounges, where you can buy tickets. The staff there speaks English. In other booking offices it's difficult to communicate in a language other than Polish.
Tomorrow is 'jutro' in Polish (pron. you-troh). If you have any questions about Polish, e.g. how to book a train ticket let me know, I'll give you some basic phrases how to buy a ticket.

railways in Poland

You can also take a direct Euro City daily connection from Katowice to Prague (when buying a return ticket at the same time, the fare is reduced by 40 per cent). From Krakow there is direct overnight train to Prague. Queues are long usually from 2 pm till 6 pm; in the morning and late afternoon 10 minutes should be enough. You can also buy a ticket for a journey Katowice - Prague in Krakow. Katowice doesn't have any sights. It's a dirty and unkempt city. It is also relatively dangerous.
