You can also take a direct Euro City daily connection from Katowice to Prague (when buying a return ticket at the same time, the fare is reduced by 40 per cent). From Krakow there is direct overnight train to Prague. Queues are long usually from 2 pm till 6 pm; in the morning and late afternoon 10 minutes should be enough. You can also buy a ticket for a journey Katowice - Prague in Krakow. Katowice doesn't have any sights. It's a dirty and unkempt city. It is also relatively dangerous.
Wroclaw is a beutiful city with gorgeous architecture (visit esp. Ostrow Tumski and the Old Town Square). Even the railway station in Wroclaw is a historic building. Actually Wroclaw is the main city of Dolnoslaskie voivodship in which my hometown Legnica is located. Legnica is an old town near which a battle with Mongols was fought in 1241. It has a lot of historic architecture and a beutiful park. It was the headquarters for a large part of the Warsaw Pact's army. If you wish to visit Legnica too, I will gladly show you around (one day is enough).
As to your travel to Czech Republic by train, as far as I know the direct connection between Wroclaw and Prague was cancelled in May this year. You may try to use a bus connection (but I'm not sure if there is one) or 'combined transport' - I travelled this way to Prague last year. If you want further details, please let me know.
Yes, go to Krakow Glowny (Cracow the Main Station), which is the most central. From there everything is within a walking distance. When taking a taxi be aware that the taxi driver may want to rip you off. The fare within the city (say up to 5 km) shouldn't cost more that 20 zloties. The best online timetable in English is http://rozklad.pkp.pl/bin/query.exe/en?. It's up to date and generally includes all the changes in the departures and arrivals due to renovations and others. Avoid Intercity/Eurocity trains on Katowice-Krakow route, as they are almost as slow as normal trans but at least twice the price. Railways and trains are my hobby, so if you plan to visit also other placed, not only Krakow, let me know and I will give you some hints :)
The Katowice airport is located ca. 35 km from Katowice (actually it is in Pyrzowice). There are some direct connections to Krakow but as indicated on the website of the carrier it's better to book them in advance (phone +48 631 31 31, +48 503 471 340, I don't know whether they speak any English). If you won't be able to get to Krakow directly, go first to Katowice and then to Krakow. If choosing a train be aware it's very slow 80 km in about one and a half hour. The railway station in Katowice is one of the most dangerous in Poland so beware of pickpockets. Should you have any other questions about Poland feel free to ask.

Thanks for the report on Connemara. I really enjoyed it. Just forgot to write in the comment about the plants you mentioned, namely fuchsia. It's gorgeous. My parents have this once on their balcony. I'd like to see them in their natural habitat.
