Alexandria was once a great Italian-Greek city with a huge European population until the early 1960's. You can see the past in the Italian style buildings and corniche. It seems modeled after Naples Italy.
The corniche is a mile after mile long sea front drive unique in the world. You can see the Italian and European past in the great buildings and cafes. The crystal clear waters and beaches are inviting as are the piazza style neighborhoods. A truly unique city with a European past; it smells and feels more Italian and Greek than anything from the Middle East. You simply know that this was a great city where Greek, Italian, Armenian, Maltese, French were widely spoken. A must see!
Favourite spots:
The corniche is unique anywhere in the world. This is in essence what the city is all about.
What's really great:
Once again, the corniche is very unique and is now TEN lanes in many places. It never ends as you drive past crystal clear waters and many new hotels. Of course, the classic European buildings are beautiful even in their disrepair. Many cruise ships now go to Alexandria and is a good way to glimpse the city.
Sights:
New library, Montazah palace, Roman-Greek ruins. A treasure from the past.
Accommodations:
I was on the Holland America cruise ship MS. Prinsendam
Restaurants:
There are many places to eat which offer classic Middle-Eastern foods; make sure water is bottled and pay attention to cleanliness. Cafe Triano and Sofianopolous are classic European cafes from the past.
