2 years living in Boston

  9 votes

I lived in Boston from 2000 to 2002 on a work contract. It was great fun to live in such an interesting and diverse city. Like any big city, there is a lot to do, so have a look at my list of favorite places.

Favourite spots:
Boston Common; Museum of Fine Arts; Boston Public Library; having a drink at the top of the Prudential on a clear night - and get a beautiful view of the city; going on a whale watching tour; wandering around downtown shopping area; Filene's basement for discount clothes; following the Freedom Trail; visiting the North End (Italian section) having dinner somewhere quaint and then going to get canoli for dessert at Mike's Pastry; strolling around charming Beacon Hill; going out dancing at some great clubs; visiting Cambridge bookstores... and I could go on and on and on!! You won't get bored.

What's really great:
My best times were spent hand in hand with my boyfriend, discovering the wonderful places in Boston. Most of my favorite places in Boston that I've listed were discovered in the company of my friends or my boyfriend. It's a great, friendly city!

Accommodations:
Boston is expensive - I was living there, so I don't have much info on cheap lodging for visitors, though try the college areas. Off season times are best for cheapest rates (it is very expensive in the summer, so try spring or fall).
An interesting anecdote: before I ever lived in Boston, I went for a long weekend with a pal of mine, and we drove in from Montreal, arrived (spontaneously and unknowingly) on college graduation weekend without booking anywhere. We were stuck, wandering the streets, going from hotel to hotel - all booked. We finally came to the Westin hotel downtown and asked if they had ANYTHING available. The man at reception said everything was booked except one room of the Governor's Suite - and being 11pm at night, he let us have it for the whole long weekend for $75! It was a fantastic weekend, out of a dream, and my friend and I went and had the best time on the town, knowing we got probably the best deal anyone got in the whole city to sleep at night!

Restaurants:
No. 9 Park - very expensive, but nice for an extra-special occasion; any Italian restaurants in the North End;
